German Import Festool Laminate Trimmer

12/02/2014

From original questioner:

I acquired a festool laminate trimmer 10 years ago while working in Germany. I've been asking this question for many years and no one seems to know including electricians and electrical supply houses.
Can I run this thing on regular 220 in my shop? What kind of chord? Festool chord with a 220 plug or do I need a euro festool chord and a U.S. 220 plug? Thanks

It will run on the standard 220v in North America.......for maybe 5 minutes.

It is likely 220V 50Hz.
North American Power is 60Hz.

Check the motor label for where it specifies 50, or 60Hz power. If it is 60Hz, you will be fine.

If it is 50Hz, it will cook. There are little gizmos you can get that will convert our 60HZ power to 50Hz, or you could take the motor to a shop and see if it can be re-wound or modified for 60Hz.

heres 2 pics. Says 50-60 Hz. Does that mean I could cut off a U.S. festool chord and put a 220 plug on it?

Chris,

Yes, that's what the motor tag says. You can run it on US 60 HZ. power.

Put the appropriate plug end on it and you're good to go.

It will run faster but Festool feels the bearings are rated for the higher RPM's.

I'm now thinking the chord needs to be 220 wire? Thanks

Chris,

There is no such thing as 220 wire.

The only thing that matters is that it is of sufficient gauge to handle the load.

Because I'm not an electrician I can't tell you what gauge that might be off the top of my head, but you should be able to find that out quite easily.
