Gluing Redpine

From original questioner:

What tpye of glue do you use for redpine in making outdoor furniture. Tried using titebond III but joints failed and laminates started to come apart after it got wet?

Was the joint surface prepared minutes before you glued it? Due to resin issues, this is the key for any adhesive. TB III should be fine, so something you did is not correct. I am assuming that the wood was kiln-dried to under 12% MC and that you used the correct pressure, temperature, etc.

After doing several tests on gluing up red pine for outside use, titebond III will not hold nor will lepage outdoor glue. Both were fine until it got wet. Lepage PL Premium construction adhesive works very well, even when its wet. A lesson learned the hard way.

TB II or TB III both will withstand outside exposure very well, so the problem was the bond between the adhesive and the wood, not the adhesive itself. If done correctly, the bond is stronger than the wood itself.

I am not an expert but have been building outdoor furniture for 15 years using eastern white cedar and titebond and lepage outdoor glues and never had a problem. Started using red pine made some inside furniture used titebond II no problems. Made outside furniture used titebond III and all was well until it got wet. After I noticed a problem I did several tests using titebond II and III and lepage outdoor glues all joints were weak and broke with little effort right at the glue line when wet, all except what was glued using construction adhesive. Not sure what I did wrong but using the same methods with construction adhesive works.
