How To Finish Cabinet Corners

09/01/2015

From original questioner:

Hey guys I was wondering how you guys finish the corners of your cabinets.
right now I use 3/4 melamine particleboard screw and glue together, then I use assemble my face frame with kreg jig.

Then I kreg jig the outside of the cabinet where the face frame will attach, I screw the face frame in with pocket hole screws leaving a 1/16" proud that I sand flush and put a 10 mil veneer over the whole side of the cabinet. It looks pretty good but I have had a couple of times where it seemed like the veneer was buckling a little bit. I like square corners more then corners that have a 1/4 inch overhang side to them.

I am new at building cabinets and I am still learning a lot and I am interested in what you guys do. Please realize that I have a small shop and no cnc machines. Thanks

I use similar construction techniques for the boxes and faces. I have attached 1/4" ply to the box ends to cover the screws and have also make 5 piece panels that match the doors to cover the end. I do prefer a 1/4" overhang on the face frame and think it is much more forgiving/easier to finish.

Hey Spicolli, thanks for responding.
How do you attach your 1/4 inch plywood to the side. I tried it before by using contact cement (wilsonart) but it didnt seem to adhere as well as i wanted it to. It wasnt going to fall off or anything but I could press on the side and see some movement that I didnt like. Also the little gap between the face frame and the 1/4 inch,(I router the face frame flush) any time I filled it with famowood filler it cracks out. I dont know what I am doing wrong?
I am using double sided melamine that I sand with 60 grit and then glue the 1/4 to in so I dont use ant nails.

I also use contact cement, a layer on the back of the panel and one on the cabinet. Then I just use a large hand roller to apply pressure. I have not seen any issues using this method. I have had good luck back beveling the 1/4" panel and then scribing it into the face frame, for any small gaps I would use an acrylic latex painters caulk which seems to hold up well under the precat lacquer I have been using.

We use pocket screws to attache face frames as well. However... we have our gables flush(ish) to the inside of the face frame (a euro box hybrid). This leaves us with a 3/4 lip with overlay cabinetry and a 1 1/4" lip with inset. We then plant on end panels which get glued to the back of the face frame and screwed through the gable. Where two cabinets come together, we use 1/2 width stiles.

Sounds interesting Kris I think I know what your saying but if you had a picture to show that would be nice.
