Is Pre-Mill Useful On An Edgebander

08/19/2016

From original questioner:

I am currently looking at purchasing a new Holzher edgebander for our shop. Of course every salesman tells you that you NEED every bell and whistle known to man so I am hearing a lot about how premill will make our edges perfect.

We run our parts on a nested CNC though and I am completely satisfied with edges that I get off the router. (I can't recommend the Onsrud compression bits with Marathon coating enough- perfect edges).

In your opinion is there any benefit to having premill if my edges are already very nice?

The premill station is $8000.

Premill is the best feature you can get. You don't need to worry about the panels sitting and swelling. You also don't have to worry about the 3rd and 4th edge getting a bump due to slight overhang due to the fact it routs off the ends of the first 2 edges.
by far the best option. We just bought the flexa 47 from Casidei. We love it

I second the opinion on pre-mill once had you will not want to live without. We route all of panels with Vortex bits and it still makes a big difference

I third the recommendation. For the above mentioned reasons plus the fact that with pre-mill you don't have to worry about panel sizing before banding. Take off what you put on!
