Profile For Beaded Column???

10/08/2013

From original questioner:

I need to build a 8" dia wood column. I would like it to be beaded. Hollow, made like a old wooden barrel. Probably around 2 inches wide and 10 pieces to make the 8 in column. I would run the pieces on my moulder.

So, what I'm looking for is a profile or pattern for the individual profile to make up the column. Sort of like a reeded or fluted inside radius corner. But several put together to make a circle.

Mirror Ref almost has what I want, but looking for the exact pattern.

Anyone help??

Thanks

Are you looking for a birdsmouth cutter for the stave edge, or the reed cutter for the face of the staves?

If Russ has something close then email or fax him a drawing of what you want. I am sure he can get you what you need. His drawings are awesome and his willingness to help a fellow woodworker achieve a high standard of craftsmanship is second to none!!!
The amount of information he knows is unreal!!

Thanks for the responses.

I was in a little bit of a time bind, so I decided to try it myself in TurboCad and it just came together.

In fact we made the sample pieces yesterday and they looked and fitted fine.

Now if I can just figure out how to glue, clamp, hold, place them all together.

thanks again

Staves for smaller wood columns are typically flat boards with beveled edges. These are laid out flat along side each other with their outside edges taped. Then they're glued, rolled up into a cylinder and band-clamped. The resulting octagon is then turned on a lathe to a proper entasis and fluted or reeded.

Completed cnc staves (including fluting or reeding) and then glued together, sounds backwards to me.
