Hi all, I have a question about shellac adhesion on top of residual wood wax (antique French waxes so likely carnauba/bees). I'm mineral spiriting as much off as possible but there'll always be some molecules still there.
Will shellac, waxed or dewaxed, have a decent adherence to the stripped wax finish? I'll be painting with Annie Sloan paint over the shellac which I hope will have sealed the wax and residual satins in. Thanks to anyone who's done this already!

Try Xylene. Wear respirator and gloves.
Work in the Garage or out of doors, or in an open shop.

Thanks, will save that carcinogen as a last ditch resort...!

Nothing sticks to wax. Lots of clean rags and naphtha is the best attempt to clean it off. But like I said, use LOTS of rags. Shellac strips off easily with denatured alcohol if you find the first coat not sticking well, and you can start over.

Thanks again Rich. The paint we use adheres well to natural wax, carnauba, bees but the color in the current wax will bleed through the chalk paint® and give a sepiatone which the shellac will seal in. Alcohol and elbow grease, here I come.

Thanks for the tip-we use Zinsser Clear(waxed I think, ironically) Shellac. Will try some Bulleseye after mineraling down the surface.
