Shellac Sources

Looking for shellac powder or flake? Here are some leads. March 3, 2010

Question
I'm looking for a good shellac supplier. I recall hearing about some sort of shellac dust that dissolves rapidly. I generally need dewaxed garnet or darker shellacs. My suppliers only have the standard (though perfectly acceptable) Liberon and Hock brands.

From contributor C:
I don't know about sources, but I use a coffee grinder to reduce the flake size. They then dissolve rapidly (10 - 15 minutes) in alcohol.

From contributor R:
Shellacfinishes.biz has only dewaxed.

From contributor S:
Kremer Pigments is a good source.

From Paul Snyder, forum technical advisor:
Shellac.net has a good selection.

From contributor T:
Gold Dust from Wood Finisher's Depot.

From contributor K:
Hock Tools carries shellac. Otherwise shellac.net is great.

From the original questioner:
Thanks everyone! That really helped. Can't believe I never thought of grinding the stuff myself as well.

From contributor L:
Rockler has a dark shellac.
