Slide-Mounting a Heavy Pull-Out TV

Hardware suggestions for a difficult entertainment center problem. May 12, 2008

Question
I have a client that needs to mount a 42" HDTV on slides to pull out. The TV will slide in and out of the unit sideways (much like a pantry). My question is, has anyone done something like this for something so heavy and with so much travel? Basically, I need a pantry-style pullout that can handle about 80 lbs. and have 42 plus inches of travel. I have a couple of ideas, but not sure they will work and was hoping someone has done this before.

I would suggest the mechanism for a pocket door - the kind of door in a house that slides inside the wall instead of swinging open. It would hang from a track on top. On a larger scale, I have had barn doors that slide open on an upper track that were 20 feet long and opened very easy. Then mount a baby garage door opener in there and with a remote, the TV comes out. The client needs deep pockets for this project though?

From contributor L:
Before LCD's and flat screens we did the pullout and swivel with a 42" ten ton monster. We used Fulterer pantry slides and it still works to this day. I'm sure we have built over a 100 EC's on the referrals on those Fulterer guides.

From the original questioner:
Thanks for the Fulterer suggestion. I did a quick look and I think I should be able to find something that works.
