Thousand Canker Disease Quarantine Rules

03/10/2013

From original questioner:

Have a chance to mill a down black walnut tree. It has been down for two years. However, it is in a buffer zone for thousand cankers disease so I'll be cutting several limbs off to take home (am in Knoxville, TN, a quarantine area for the disease) to see if the beetle had attack the tree. So if there is no evidence of thousand cankes disease can the wood be transported to a non-buffered area?

That's a good question and one I don't know the answer to. My guess is that if it's in a quarantine area it can't removed whether it shows evidence or not, but like I say it's just a guess. Interested to see what the answer is . . . .

No, you cannot move the wood out of the quarantine area. Those little buggers are so small, you need a magnifying glass to see them, and most trees that are infested go for a number of years before showing signs of the TCD. The only way to know for sure is to send a twig sample in for testing. The official TCD web site is listed below.
I hate to see this, as I have planted, pruned & thinned thousands of black walnut trees in Missouri, and walnut is a huge industry in the state, as well as an important part of the forest.

Went by to see the walnut trees. They are down but still alive so moving them out of the quarantine area is not possible, even moving them to the buffer counties is not possible. Thanks for the input.

Our county just got quarrantined on the ash borer. TN Forestry agency can help you with your questions....but this may be federally handled....YOU WANT to talk to them for your answers....hearsay can get you in DEEP FINES and they don't care. Only ash logs are quarrantined here, BUT ALL FIREWOOD is.

My understanding, I can mill ash BUT have to have agency to check and certify if I ship out of county. We have no buffer counties and all ash mills are out of county. They have guidelines and time frames it can be moved. I only have a few to mill or firewood.

Have a Blessed and prosperous evening in Jesus's Awesome Love,
Tim

Yes we have the emerald ash borer here as well, so APHIS ( Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service) has quarantine our county as well. If you live in a quarantine county you cannot move ash or walnut out of that county. Best thing since most people cannot ID ash or walnut is not to move firewood is the best protection.
