I need to build a pass thru door for a pantry. The door wants to be able to recess vertically into a wall, similar to how a double hung window with pulley, rope & iron weights.
I would like, however, to use a spring & cable rather than a rope and weight. I am hoping to be able to affect tension to balance the weight of the door so it doesn't have a guillotine effect.
Does anybody know of something like this for restoring old windows?

These guys will have it, though I have no idea where in there to find it.
Spring balances with wound up springs on a reel may be what you want - easier to deal with than rope and pulley.
Weight of the sash/door is what drives selection.
