Hafele Website Down

2/6/23

Does anyone know anything about what's going on with Hafele? Their website has been down for a few days and it says they experienced a cyber attack. We have a few orders that were supposed to come last week but never showed.

I am aware of their phone #. It doesn’t work. I would not have asked here if it was as simple as placing a phone call. Thanks though.

That's the phone number that was listed on the message I got when I tried to access their website. And yes it is German.

Now that we have successfully listed all of Hafele’s phone numbers in one spot, I thought it might be helpful to provide an update to anyone who might be interested.

Häfele had a cyber attack last week. My sales rep finally called me back today and let me know that they will be down through the rest of the week while they evaluate what information was stolen. If you have credit cards or debit cards stored on the website, now might be a good time to change those numbers.

Hafele was hacked last week. Website is down. Their email accounts are down. Phone lines are down and their complete operating system is down. This is not just Hafele USA but Hafele worldwide. This has shut down their 38 subsidiaries all around the world.

Ive been told that the Häfele website is being held for a Ransome of upwards of $50M and that Häfele is not willing to pay but has instead, started the process of rebuilding the site from the ground up.

I'm always shocked to hear they don't have a full backup of their sites. It should be as simple as taking out a few hard drives that have been in storage and revitalize the website. I know my website could be put back in a matter of an hour. It's not complicated, but all's that means is it might take a couple of days to put back a complicated site.

My sales representative didn't get back to me until today, but when he did, he informed me that their website will be offline for the rest of the week while they determine what data was compromised. If you have any credit card or debit card information saved on the website, now might be a good time to go in and make the necessary changes.

I empathize with Hafele's situation, however their response and action has been less than one would expect
No outreach to inform their customers of the situation and share somewhat of a plan going forward (I would assume that would relay from corporate management to regional salespersons)
The Canadian contacts listed above are worthless...unable to contact my regional support rep, and after weeks of trying the above numbers and email, was informed today that they only serve customers with a Canadian account and nothing in the US
My regional rep now anticipates US possibly online next week
I live near their Dallas Tx distribution center and they can't allow even will call orders because of no computers
Funny, I recall that we functioned for decades in the lumber business with hand written sales tickets
Things have become entirely too dependent on computers and people no longer know or care how to function in analog

I'm one of Häfele America Co.'s two corporate trainers and am in no position to speak on behalf of even our one subsidiary, but as a semi-active member here I'd like to shed a little light from my perspective.

Yes, on February 2nd our world-wide operations were struck by a cyber attack that it is believed was launched from Russia, along with a number of other large German companies, theoretically in retaliation for Germany's support of Ukraine. The attackers didn't shut us down, but rather we shut ourselves down to prevent them from taking control. We are currently rebuilding from the ground up and yes, of course there were some back-ups in place, but what if those back-up are corrupted? And consider also that The Häfele Group has 37 subsidiaries, multiple factories and thousands of remote sales reps, all with computers running multiple software platforms, you can imagine that rebuilding is quite a task.

On a personal note; I've been in my role since 1999 and had 24 years worth of photos, email archives, newsletter drafts, raw video files, mounting instructions, PowerPoints, etc. saved on my computer and on shared drives that I can only assume will never be recovered. It's mind-blowing and personally heart-breaking.

Even so, just to tell you what an awesome company I work for, on February 3rd, just the day after the attack, the training team was instructed to gather whatever samples, catalogs and mockups that we had available and to start teaching our wonderful Customer Service staff whatever we could. We conducted several weeks of product training, both virtually for our remote staff and in person in Archdale, NC, in Dallas, TX and in Los Angeles. Our executives were determined to keep our folks on the payroll and to make the best of a bad situation.

Another amazing fact that might just get me in trouble for sharing is that we continued to ship what orders we could, that we determined to be mission-critical for our customers, even when we had no way to invoice for the goods for a couple weeks!

So, in a nutshell I can say that we wouldn't wish this experience on our worst enemy and we sure do appreciate our patient customers who have stuck with us through this. And this has certainly shown us what we are made of: Ingenuity, fortitude and FAMILY.

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.
  • Participants are encouraged to use their real name when posting. Intentionally using another persons name is prohibited, and posts of this nature will be removed at WOODWEB's discretion.
  • Comments, questions, or criticisms regarding Forum policies should be directed to WOODWEB's Systems Administrator
    (return to top).

Carefully review your message before clicking on the "Send Message" button - you will not be able to revise the message once it has been sent.

You will be notified of responses to the message(s) you posted via email. Be sure to enter your email address correctly.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).

The staff of WOODWEB assume no responsibility for the accuracy, content, or outcome of any posting transmitted at WOODWEB's Message Boards. Participants should undertake the use of machinery, materials and methods discussed at WOODWEB's Message Boards after considerate evaluation, and at their own risk. WOODWEB reserves the right to delete any messages it deems inappropriate. (return to top)
