Hi, I just moved into a new shop. my problem is the ambient dust as there is no cross ventilation. there is a 12'x 10' roll up door and a walk through door at one end and thats it. i have one of those hanging blower/filters but i wonder how much i actually does. an suggestions? Shop is 1100-1200 sq. feet with fairly good dust collection. Thanks

A couple air filters hanging form the ceiling will take care of that dust. I have a small Jet filter that runs all day everyday regardless of what I'm doing. Then there are 2 bigger JDS air filters on different ends of the shop I use when needed. They do work and the difference is noticeable.
good luck,

If you only have a smaller air filter like I do (JDS 750) take a couple of fans and direct the airflow towards the filter. It really speeds up the process.

Ok. I'll pick up some more air filters. I have a cheapo jet knock knock off (poweraid or something). So far the thing has worked for over 3 years with no problems. Maybe I'll check Harbor Freight for another cheapo. Or is there something about "JDS" or "Jet" that makes it better than a knock off?

The JDS and the Jet are basically furnace fans with fine filters....nothing all that special. I'd just make sure the inside pocket filter is of decent quality and you should be fine. The exterior I tossed after a couple years and now just use normal pleated air filters.

Collect dust at the source is the first strategy.
If you sand, get a Festool or Fein with a vacuum - you will never go back. If you must do hand sanding, try to set up a sanding booth or table, with positive and negative pressures to collect the ambient dust.
If you use a router, replace it with a shaper or router table and good dust collection. If it is a hand router, then rig up a hose, or use the sanding booth mentioned above.
Check all your collection points and lines and make sure you have no leaks and can get full suction when and where you want it. Corrugated hose slows down velocity a bunch - limit their use as much as possible.
Lastly, get your collector - barrel, bag, box - out of your shop. Set it up in a closet or separate place, preferably with an exterior access. This literally will get the dust out of your shop so you don't have to change bags in the shop.

3M makes a very good air-powered dustless orbit sander. We have several of them. And as mentioned, get your dust collection bag/box out of your work area.

A good and proper ventilation is very necessary to keep the area dust free. Thus a ventilation system is must for keeping the area clean and fresh.
