I have a customer who has provided me a model number on a microwave that is supposed to go in an island base cabinet. The model is a convection microwave and the install specs state to not install in a base cabinet for "safety reasons". Is this simply due to a tipping hazard, or are there other reasons? The instructions are pretty vague on the reason, but all the install instructions are strictly for an over-the-range application. We run into this from time to time on microwaves and have installed them anyway, but never on a convection microwave. I always advise the customer to purchase a built-in microwave, with a trim kit, but they often seem to ignore this. Best-case scenario, they never look right. Are there variables with this type of installation other than a tipping hazard? How do you handle situations like this with built-in microwave openings? I can size the opening to fit the oven, but I have never been completely comfortable doing so. Are over-the-range microwaves strictly for that application? Does the "convection" feature play into it? Thanks for your advice and input.
