Edgebanding glue

We have a Biesse Akron 420 edgebander. We are currently using Jowalt glue and are having issues. The glue burns, turns to a dark brown color and crusts the inside of the pot. Thus creating issues with glue flow on the roller as little bits of burnt glue impede a good flow.
Any recommendations from experience about what type of glue is best would be appreciated. Also what temp should the glue be at, I was told there is no setting for the temperature on this glue pot...?

Hi Lindsey
You should check with Jowat to see what their temperature recommendation is for the particular formula you're using. This is definitely not a glue issue but, rather, a temperature issue. Once you're able to set the correct temperature you should clean the pot and purge the lines before doing any more edgebanding.

Glues come with recommended temperature ranges based on track speeds.

"Open time" is the period of time from the moment glue is applied to the edge of the panel till the board reaches the pressure roller section. If the glue is too cold the glue won't squeeze out when the panel reaches the first pressure roller. If the glue is too hot the edging can slip and won't be properly adhered to the edge of the panel as the panel travels through the machine. Ambient temperature can affect the glue temperature during "open time" as well as the temperature of the panel. In cold weather regions a heated fence is helpful. Some glues are appropriate for high speed track machines but won't work in slower track feed machines. The same is true of glue designed for slower track speed machines.

My personal preference for the edgebanders I sell and for many of the other brands I service is Jowat 280.30. As a general rule I like glue without fillers. You can achieve a zero to near zero glue line, the operating temperature is lower, and the absence of the fillers that are in less expensive glue often translates to less burning in the pot.

Other important factors are a machine with a pre melt will keep the level of the glue in the pot lower. You should also turn the temperature down or turn the glue pot off if you aren't using the machine for 30 minutes or more.

We are running 288.60 in an Akron 1440 and used it in a Lato 38 for years with absolutely no problems.

However, the key is this. Keep the storage bag sealed shut. Turn the bander off if not in use or lower the thermostat to turn of the elements. In the case of our Akron is shuts off automatically.

The other big factor at play is fill for only what you need. When we are running 7 days a week, the premelter is full and on. When slower the premelter is off and the pot remains very low. However, it is checked regularly.

Tech support is excellent at Jowat. We use 288.60 with great success with 3mm, 1/2 mil, wood and laminate strips that are primed. We run countertops and cabinet parts all day.

Keep the glue spreader clean as per the maint manuals Use the stick in the pot routine throw out over heated crap. It’s not worth the agrivation

When it comes to edgebanders and glues it’s imperative to call the machine manufacturer and ask what is recommended to be used as a lot of the engineers design with a manufactures spec in mind.

Good information provided. Jowat makes good glue. Follow standard operating procedures and you won't have any problems. Read the information for the glue used and set the machine accordingly. I'm not familiar with that machine but I suspect it is a slow feed rate machine. Ask Jowat for a recommendation. NOT a SALESMAN!
Burned glue comes from either pot temperature set too high or the glue being cooked too long.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
