Sander/Mirka

So I have been running a Mirka Ceros for what seems like forever. Today, right where the cord joins the sander at the base, I got a huge spark, small flame with a lovely sizzle sound and smoke. Luckily I did not burn my hand. So, I need a new sander that is preferably 5" because I have a ton of discs left. What are you guys using/recommend? I dont have it in me right now to sit in front of this computer researching past posts so any help would be appreciated. I dont want to go pneumatic either.

Thanks!

The Deros would be it's replacement. It's larger.

Did you try to repair it?

Between the flames and electrical burn smell, my thought is its pretty much toasted. I quickly looked up the website but haven't had much of chance yet to look into it. What would be great is to buy just the sander and keep the transformer unit and hoses.

The Ceros has been discontinued for quite some time now. You might be able to find one second hand but I doubt it. I would look to see if the fuse on the transformer is blown, pretty sure there's one there.

Leo,

Thanks for the advice but even if the fuse is blown, I still had flames coming out at the base of the sander so Im pretty sure the electronics are fried. Im actually very lucky my hand was out of the way. I tried emailing support at Mirka and as expected, no response. I have a hard time spending my $ again with Mirka after what has happened. Im not a huge fan of festool so Ill probably look into the 5 or 6" surf prep. They all probably come out of the same factory anyway.

I had good response with Mirka..... when the sander was in warranty. Plus I went through my supplier who gave me a loaner sander to keep me going.

Depends on what caught fire. If it was just the wires that's one thing. If it was the circuitry it's done. I don't think there are any parts around for repair.

Yeah, Im way out of warranty seeing it was discontinued in 2016. I guess I got my moneys worth out of it though. Time to sharpen up the card scraper and bedrock plane until I figure out what direction Im going to go in.

I use my Ceros hard. Nearly every day. I use it for wood and finishes although much less now that I have the Deos sander.

They had a recall and I sent it in for that. I think they replaced the circuit board. And once more because the balance mechanism broke and it shook like a paint shaker. They fixed that also under warranty.

If mine pooped out I would get another one, likely a Deros because that's what's available. It's bigger though. Love the Ceros because it's actually smaller than a Dynabrade air sander.

Hope you are happy with whatever you choose.

You wouldnt happen to know if the deros sander will work on the ceros transformer and if so, would they sell just the deros sander? I know..alot to ask and I probably just need to contact Mirka. Im looking at the surf prep 5" now for $578. Im primarily just removing mill marks with it using 100 to 120 grit and do the final sanding (120-150) by hand

I dont think my ceros was in that recall.

The Deros exists to get rid of the transformer. It is self contained and you just plug it in. It is larger than the Ceros, but not hugely so.

I guess so many people complained about having to drag that transformer around or get expensive DC extension cords they revamped it so the power supply is internal.

I just bought the DC extension cord along with a longer vacuum hose and I think it's 33' long. If I put the setup in the center of my shop I can reach pretty much the whole shop.

Might just be the power cable as it tends to break at the sander junction. Take it apart and look at the circuit board. If not fried fixthe cable.

We service our 2 all the time plus we have a deros plus 2 dynabrades.

If airvantage are still offering they are a lower cost alternative in the same.ceros form factor and use to be 319 with sepaerate transformer. Few less feature but still great dc sanders

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
