I have been keeping a couple of marketing ideas up my sleeve to use if or when they were needed. Now that I am no longer associated with a shop, I thought I would describe them here so someone could reap their benefits. R
First is a pop up type card. You know, as it opens, cabinets and or furniture pop up in three dimensions. Four stile and rail paneled walls would be best - simple and plain. Photograph each of the four walls for low distortion or fix in the software. Use tabs in the card stock to fit thru slots.

The second is a nice sample of a mortise and tenon, azmaybe 1-1/4” square. The tenon, once removed from the mortise, houses a thumb drive with about 12 to 20 photos of your best work. Also a screen about contacts to make it complete. Maybe a logo on the outside.

Either one, if done well, is clever enough that the recipient (in a mass mailing) will not trash it, but it will live on his/her desk, or be passed around and handled by everyone. Then you and your name will be associated with clever, neat solutions to any problem.

Lots of people will be leary of a thumb drive from a stranger. One of the best ways to introduce a virus or spyware to a computer. I've always been inspired by pop ups. I bought one at the Gamble House in Pasadena when I went for a tour. It looked to be laser cut, but in quantity it might still be a dye cut.

RichC beat me to it. My employer banned thumb drives years ago. I like these ideas, though, and might suggest laser engraving a QR code on the tenon rather than adding the cost of a thumb drive, perhaps with a tantalizing offer such a "Often times a craftsman's best work is never seen. Scan to see more of our attention to detail" or something like that.

That thumb drive was a late ‘90’s idea.

The popup idea came from a friend working for Linda Bloodworth Thomason's education foundation in Poplar Bluff, MO. They built a room for a 14 th century Irish castle that was being stripped of its wood panels. Huge pediment overdoors, walk in mantle, complete with rift oak floors, and ceiling t&g. A fabulous room. All waxed finish, by the way.

It was a flat cardboard pack that simply opened up. The inside of the room was photo based, with a bit of haziness from the darkroom, the out side has text boxes everywhere, explaining details, design choices, and materials. A $700k room, including the crew that came with it to install. Any decent kitchen could make a winning pop-up.
