Thermally Modified Wood

Hi,

Did anybody build exterior doors with Thermally Modified Wood?
Specifically Ayous or Korina?
We have used Accoya with good results for paint grade but it does not have very nice grain and that makes it less desirable for a stain grade product.
Looking for any info good or bad.

I had to finish a thermally modified wood door. I think it was mahogany. So I stained it and put a 2K poly coat on them.

The door jambs and astragal molding were just normal wood. Everything looked really nice when I finished. It went through one seasonal cycle and the stain on the doors had faded to almost non existent. The stain on the jambs and astragal was still perfect. Weird.

The thermal properties of the door was poor. It would get frost on the inside of the door because the door would get so cold and the interior humidity would freeze on it. Again, weird. The company insisted that the joint around the panel and frame needed to be silicon caulked. I did that and it seemed to help some. But that essentially meant the door couldn't be finished again. I can't imagine having to removed the caulk to reapply finish as nothing sticks to silicon.

I wasn't impressed. This was after I had built them a door a decade ago which performed as expected. Stained on the exterior and painted on the interior and no problems in the winter with interior frost.

Hi Leo,

How cold does it get in you region?
We are in the Canadian Rockies and sell into the Prairies as well.
I would suspect we could end up with the same thermal problem.
This did not happen with the Accoya.
I m suspecting the Thermal Modification of Hardwoods makes them denser and that may result in the loss of insulation properties.

North East. Normal night winter temps in the 20ºF's but as low as 5 below. Days swing around freezing. Not as bad as upper Maine with their -20ºF's

My theory about the wood is all the cells in the wood get ruptured and that's where the insulatory action happens. The thermal break so to speak. Without it the insulation value goes down.

But that's just a guess.

I wouldn't think the wood density has changed based on my experience. I built a few modified poplar doors that would fully exposed to the elements. They have held together but I was disappointed to see the rich chocolate colour fades quickly with sun exposure. I recommend you make a finished sample and put it outside to simulate the conditions your doors will encounter.
Structurally I don't think you will have problems

I was thinking the thermal properties of the wood changed and made it less of an insulator.
