Scammer on Machinery Exchange

I thought I would post this here to let everyone know there is a scammer on the loose.

I posted 2 machines for sale on the Machinery Exchange, 1 sold fairly quickly and I knew I was dealing with a legitiment company. The other I had a funny feeling.

Most of our communication was done via text message, and the 2 times we spoke, his English was so bad I could hardly understand him. We worked out a price and he said he would mail me a check, and soon as it cleared, he would have a truck here to pick it up.

He said he was from NC, the check was mailed from MS, and the company name on the check was from TX. I called the company from TX and it turns out I was the second person that called today in regards about a check, and it was for another woodworking machine. The check was counterfeit, and a good one at that.

The moral of the story, only accept a cashiers check, not a company check unless you know who you are dealing with.

The fraudulent check was written from Aries Freight Systems. The person I spoke with was very good to work with, and I'm sure she doesn't mind that I am letting people know what is going on.

I often struggle with how to buy machinery on the used market. Ideally, I want to go and see it in person, at which time I'll write a cheque or pay cash. There's several large machines that I am interested it, just never able to figure out who sends money first, and who's butt is on the line (somebody has to trust first).

Hi all,
I'm glad Mark avoided the scam before it was too late. At Woodweb, we do try to block/weed out possible scam responses, but it's not easy. Because of the high $$ amounts involved, the machinery exchange does draw some bad actors.

The case above points out some clues that you are being scammed, and I can add a few more:

- Buyer asks questions already answered in the post (eg. "What is the price?").
- Buyer won't communicate via phone call (only text / email).
- Buyer offers to pay "extra" money for shipping, or some special arrangement.

As old fashioned as it might seem, requesting a phone call might be a good test if anything seems off with the buyer. If that's refused for any reason, it's probably a red flag.

Buying on the used machinery market is much easier than selling.

OP fell for a very old scam.

Sad but it still happens.

Buyers shouldnt be suspicious of places like woodweb or anywhere for that matter. Do your due dillgence. Buying sight unseen from a.reputable seller is still a great way to score great machines at a great price.... but you still have to do the work

I have found that dealing with other woodworkers is always trustworthy. Most of us are too tired to try to cheat anyone.
I have found Woodweb to be clean, except for the obvious cheats that are pushing the old scams.
I also have had no trouble at all with two major auction/used sites - IRS - Industrial Recovery Services and Ex-Factory. Both buying and selling.
Due diligence is still required, as well as common sense.

Yes one must be careful. I have purchased quite a few used machines over he years. Some were very good deals, others were good for what the need I purchased them for, and few were boat anchors. I am fairly good with doing repairs myself, I know basic electrical and pnematics so that really helps. I stay away from buying/selling anything that someone won't let you look at or does not want to see. I will take business check but will not ship until it clears but I always call the bank and the business to verify. Of course google the bank and the business to get the correct addresses and phone numbers. Just use basic common sense. Dealing with IRS and x factory auctions are ok but the additional fees, taxes auction surcharges, loading etc can add up to a 20 % or more increase above your bid price. Auction houses charge the seller15-18% to list an item, so they are making 30%o so off the sale. I have often wondered about the "secret bidder" who has no intention of actually buying the product but at the instructions of the owner or auction house bids just to raises the price of the item. Just remember if a deal is just to good to be true, or if the price is only good for today, watch out for the red flags.

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.
  • Participants are encouraged to use their real name when posting. Intentionally using another persons name is prohibited, and posts of this nature will be removed at WOODWEB's discretion.
  • Comments, questions, or criticisms regarding Forum policies should be directed to WOODWEB's Systems Administrator
    (return to top).

You will be notified of responses to the message(s) you posted via email. Be sure to enter your email address correctly.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).

The staff of WOODWEB assume no responsibility for the accuracy, content, or outcome of any posting transmitted at WOODWEB's Message Boards. Participants should undertake the use of machinery, materials and methods discussed at WOODWEB's Message Boards after considerate evaluation, and at their own risk. WOODWEB reserves the right to delete any messages it deems inappropriate. (return to top)
