Once again appliance specs suck

Building a kitchen with Thermador appliances. Called Thermador twice ("all we have are the online specs") Visited a showroom twice (can't yank out appliances to see what's going on behind face frame") Scoured Thermador specs (lacking info once again) Nowhere does it show what the relationship of bottom of microwave (mbes) to bottom of trim kit is OR what the flange to body of oven is. How do you build a kitchen with half cocked information? Why God, WHY don't they have an engineer or cabinet maker draw the specifics of the appliances in a diagram with dimensions in section plan and elevation??

I had the same problem with an all thermador kitchen I did 2 years ago. Not only was information missing, but but some of the supplied specs were just wrong. The phone support people would just read back their online specs, which was no help at all. All the appliances were back ordered and didn't arrive until weeks after the cabinets had been installed. The range hood specs were off by 2", I had to remove and rebuild the upper cabinet. The refrigerator specs were incomplete, so I had to just make the best guess about how the surround would work and tie into the other cabinets. It took some reworking of the valance and scribes to make fit. The specs for the built in microwave and it's trim kit were useless. That also needed a bunch of extra time to make it work. If I had to do another Thermador kitchen, I would add 15% to cover the extra time and frustration.

Yes- appliances, from the cabinetmakers and installers view point- stink on freaking ice!!
I've been stuck with appliance installs more than once by contractors and it's bull***t-
I don't sell appliances
I don't service appliances
I'm not profiting on the appliances in any way
WHY ARE THEY MY PROBLEM?
Why can't we get a freaking dimension - in fractional inches,( this is the USA), from anyone? Why do I have to way until they are delivered to get any info?
I wouldn't allow anyone to ship an appliance to my shop, unless they're ready to take out an insurance binder on them AND pay me rent for the space.
The last kitchen I did, I badgered the architect for the measurements- he started to refuse to answer the phone
I once hired an Appliance Installation Crew from the local dealer-$65 pr hr pr man- and thought my troubles were over- they came and unboxed them, brought them in and placed them in front of the opening they went in- they DID NOT touch anyone's cabinets in any way, I had to put them in and test run everything.
And the plumber and electrician were just as bad, they would neither pull them forward or push them back in place to make their connections. So there was two days of waiting for them ( couldn't both be there at the same time)
So, I just won't be responsible for kitchen installs anymore, it's tailgate delivery just like everyone else.
Shame really, I used to be a nice guy.......

And then there's Sub Zero... You'd think a company that sells $20,000 refrigerators could put out an accurate spec sheet. Or at least update it when their glaring errors have been pointed out. I had a client that purchased a new Sub Zero and wanted me to build and finish door panels for it. I wanted to wait until the appliance arrived to confirm the measurements, but they were adamant about proceeding by just using the supplied Sub Zero specs. That's a mistake I won't make again. Only one of the three panels fit, and I got stuck with the rework. The appliance company that sold it said they'd bill Sub Zero for my time, but I never saw a penny...

I feel, your pain on this topic. The bottom line is you have to charge for your time and effort when integrated appliances are part of the kitchen. I have done 35k kitchens where the appliances are 65k. If the client can afford these prices, than you should be charging him for the service. This includes printing out the specs, studying them, making sure that the appliances work in the design, and possibly help out the installers.
Once you look at it as part of the total service that you are offering and make it clear to the client that you will be the ONLY one watching out for his concerns and you will be charging accordingly, than it all becomes a part of the day's work. There are 2 Asco dishwashers, subzero integrated fridge and freezer columns, wall oven, microwave drawer, two cooktops unercabinet oven in this kosher kitchen. It didn't all get installed smoothly or even at the same time and the fridge and freezer panels were installed twice as the designer decided to have custom handles made at the last minute, BUT, I charged for every bit of that work! Harold.
