Frameless edge banding with finished plywood

If i use prefinished plywood for frameless cabinetry how do i handle the edge banding of the front carcass edges? Can i purchase pre finished edge banding? If so, what if they don’t sell the color i am looking for? These are probably dumb questions but I haven’t made frameless cabinets before.

Your best options are to look at available colors from numerous suppliers for a suitable match. If no suitable match is available your only real option is to mask and finish the faces of the boxes.

A good option is to, in the design phase, spec a close or contrasting match behind tight reveals that would be acceptable for carcass banding. If you keep tight reveals/gaps it may be acceptable. If your needing dead match for doors, drawers, etc. there isnt really an option

Troy Cabinets can prefinish wood veneer edgebanding.
I have used them a couple of times.
I think Conestoga may finish edgebanding also.

How do you deal with trimmed edges and ends on pre-finished banding?

To add to my question, the OP states colored banding, not wood prefinished banding. Edge trimming and ends on prefinished wood tape are less of an issue but on pigmented work (he states what if they dont have the color I want) the edge trimming and ends would likely be more of an issue without using a color in PVC?

Interesting to hear if someone is offering custom matched colors (somehow spray/prefinishing tape) in any color required. It would seem a trimming nightmare.

The OP asked for prefinished edge banding for the front of prefinished plywood frameless cabinet boxes.
I assumed he would want veneer banding finished to match the doors.
If you want PVC then you have to shop for the closest color.

To your questions;
The ends don't really show on boxes.
The edges, after trimming would not have finish for the .020 thickness of the banding.
If this bothers you, a little stain on a rag or a Mohawk touch up pen may work.
The small unfinished thickness of the edge has not been any problem in my jobs which have been finished in stain.
Doors would be another matter, but we are talking boxes.

I had assumed when the OP stated color it was either a pigmented (paint) job, or a non-standard stain color. Having a small quantity of raw banding custom stained and cleared would seem extremely cost prohibitive as would having a custom color pigmented banding.

Even shops like Edgeco have a million color options in both PVC for pigmented and natural wood prefinished. Thought based on the question was none of them are a match.

Sorry for not making myself clear as to stain color and finish sheen.
The doors and drawer fronts are a medium brown stain/glaze and are made from Knotty Alder. I am wanting to know if I should make unfinished plywood boxes, edge band them and then stain and spray satin clear?
Or does it make more sense to use pre finished plywood and then apply edge banding? I’m just not sure which option looks best and isn’t an unreasonable amount of labor. I do not have an edge banding machine. It would have to be pre glued iron on i suppose.

Well, thats a lot different that a flawless pigment match.

I would think depending on your prefinished ply carcass color it would be pretty easy for you to find either:
1. a raw knotty alder banding you could pre-stain and finish (sponge/rag whatever) after application by hand or machine
2. a very close medium brown pre-finished banding regardless of species

If your cab interiors are for instance pre-finished UV clear maple, a close or direct match pre finished as bill mentioned would be simple.

When you said "color" I incorrectly assumed pigmented/paint. Stain/clear is much more forgiving.

If you hit a site like Edgeco I would almost guarantee you'd find a suitable prefinished medium brown color match unless your customer is extremely fussy in which case I dont think you'd be asking because the only solution would be shop sawn and applied banding in the same species as the doors/fronts. There are likely a dozen reasonable matches in pre-finished brown stain from most vendors.

We try to find a wood grain pvc banding that will match fairly close or else we finish the banding after it is applied which takes time.

I'm almost exclusively full custom frameless. Pigmented or stain-grade, either way it's really easy. For pigmented work, as others have suggested, try to find a PVC banding that matches the spec'd color best as possible - if not, edge with any solid wood species, gang stack the parts in the spray booth, and finish the edgebanding before cab assembly (this limits overspray). For stain-grade, I use whatever solidwood species the job is spec'd on and band with the same. I then stain parts with a rag dipped in the stain, then gang stack and topcoat in the booth as per the pigmented schedule.

Your options are much more limited when you have to use pre-glued edgebanding - your best bet is probably using solidwood banding and finishing like I've suggested. Keep your reveals tight and in reality very little banding even shows through past the finished fronts.

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
