We are looking to buy a new edgebander that can grow with us from the 2 kitchens/month phase to the 1 kitchen/week level (and maybe beyond if wecan outsource installs or sell to contractors who can handle it themselves. Right now, I don't forsee doing much in the way of thick PVC, mostly thin PVC and wood. It would also be nice to have the option to run wood framed doors through to round all corners.

Is there a good resource for how to select a newer machine?
What machines should be on our short list in the $50-$90k range?
Do we need to spend that much to get great results that don't require additional hand work?
Who has the best service and training?

Banders are hateful horrible machines. Whoever can service it is likely your best bet.

You will need a machine with pre-mill, end trim, top/bottom, glue scrape, radius scrape, corner rounding, and buffing.

In that price range, you can definitely afford a new machine. A European brand like SCM, Holzher, Homag, and Biesse will be your best bet for reliability, parts, and service.

You can get a very nice, solid machine from Vantedge in that price range. I run a 6.5 model it’s equipped with 3mm scrapers, if your not doing 3mm, a 5.5 or 6.0 is your model.

I'd look at the Holzher Auriga 1308. I spent quite a bit of time shopping for a new bander a few months ago. Ended up with a Holzher Sprint 1329, but we were close to going with the 1308, decided to spend more money. The 1308 will be at the top of your price point, but will give you almost full servo control, the only hand set dial on the machine is for the banding thickness. The GluJet system is wonderful, I'll never go back to a machine with a glue pot. The GluJet is particularly nice for a shop that needs to run the machine a day or two a week, and then be able to quickly warm up the machine and run a few parts when needed. There are also many good machines with glue pots, the disadvantages of a glue pot fade as you get to the point where the machine is running all day. Maintenance is much easier on the Holzher system, though the cost of glue is roughly double.

I looked seriously at machines from Biesse and Homag as well, and both companies had a lot to offer. We ultimately chose Holzher as we have a very good technician within an hour of our shop. I'd suggest you look for the same.
