I know it's often said that scraping is only for 3mm or 2mm+, but I've read some posts where some people say they scrape 1mm. I'm interested in getting a nice round profile with 1mm banding. I believe the only trimmers available to me are 2mm, is there any issue with using these in conjunction with a 1mm scraping insert? I'm just doing 1mm banding on 3/4 melamine all day long so I don't need flexibility.

Also, if not a 1mm insert, what about 1.5 mm?

I would be surprised if you can't get 1mm trimmers especially if they take inserts. If you can't find them stock I'm sure you could have them made. Most of the work should be done by the trimmers. Scrapers only take off a very fine shaving mostly to remove the chatter left by the trimmers. I don't think you could scrape with a 1mm scraper if the trimmer isn't also 1mm. You would either be taking too much material with the scraper or you wouldn't get the profile you want. I run mostly 1mm tape and always scrape it.

I use 2mm rad cutters on my 1mm banding, it looks great and you really cant tell the difference. It comes out so nice I don't scrape it but I could if I wanted to. would work just fine if you tune in the scraper to match the trimmer.

Thanks for the replies.

I know GDP will make custom scraping inserts, I imagine I can get those in any size.

The trimmers are three blade with no inserts and I'm not aware of anyone who makes those custom. I made some inquiries and found I can buy off the shelf trimmers in 1.5mm, 2mm and 3mm.

The manual recommends keeping scrapings under 0.15 mm, which would be possible using a 1.5mm trimmer and a 1mm scraper. I calculated the minimum scraping thickness at 0.11mm in this case. Not sure if this would work well or be worthwhile.

I have some TFL panel samples from various manufacturers that are banded with 1mm and they all appear to have been scraped with a 1mm radius.

Our bander has a multiple size trimer and scraper cutters. Trimer has 0.5(not a radius, but a 15* bevel), 1mm, 2mm and solid wood. Scraper is 1mm and 2mm. We've used 2mm trimmers with 1mm scraper when our 1mm trimmer edge was damaged from running hpl and it works fine. We've also used 2mm trimmers and 2mm scrapper on 0.5mm and 1mm banding on our old edgebander without issues. Still use 1mm scraper on all of our 0.5mm banding and it looks great.
