PLAM frame glass door methods
3/31/15
I am in the shop drawing phase of a project that has about 80 doors the are PLAM frame with tempered glass and was curious if anyone had developed the magic trick to making these doors. We have built many of them over the years and it seems as if we try a new way every time. We definitely do not want to edge band the inside frame by hand and we want a clean stable method for keeping the glass in place. I would certainly appreciate any idea share here!
Our substrate is mdf and we will be using 3/16" tempered glass.

just a thought...we make mitered doors on a bacci miter door machine with a dowel/spline assembly. machine cuts door frame with upcut saw to proper miter angles and drills for dowell and spline joint thru matching shaper cutters all on same machine. might be able to edgeband both sides of frame stock then feed thru miter door machine and assemble.

Keith, thanks for the thought! I did think about mitering them and putting together with Hoffmann dovetail keys but did not think about using someone with a mitered door machine. I was concerned that we would have a hard time getting a consistent cut. Is this something that you would be interested in trying? If so, where are you located?

I would be glad to help if I can. I have a holzher edgebander and could possible run frame parts with banding and ship to you ready for assembly. but keep in mind they assemble easier with a miter door clamp. We could assemble if needed and ship prepared for you to apply laminate to face and back side. Located in Amarillo Texas. Hightech Cabinets.

We have done this when they wouldn't accept a stop that covered the cutout. I think we oversized the stiles and rails and then trimmed the door to size, then edge the exterior of the door. We just doweled or lamelloed the stiles and rails together.
