Faceframe Hinges

I built faceframe kitchen cabs for customer with 1-3/8 in. overlay doors - this is the first time I ever did full overlay. They want soft close hinges. I found a Blum Compact Blumotion hinge that works but customer doesn't like the 3/16 in. gap because some of the cabs will be lit inside and they are afraid of ligth leaking out and are worried about dust getting in cabs. Anyone know of a solution to either (1) a differnt hinge that closes the gap (they want soft close in the hinge and not add-ons)...OR...(2) a solution to blocking the light in the cabs that will be lit?

The only way you can get rid of the gap is go to a two piece hinge and get away from the compact. That's the reason I stopped using them.

I would agree with Mike.

This is a common downside to any brand of compact style face frame hinge. Using a “long arm” Euro hinge and a face frame adapter mounting plate will indeed bring the door close to the face frame. The challenge however will be your 1-3/8” overlay.

Without some serious modifications to the face frame you will only get a maximum overlay of 15/16” using a hinge and mounting plate combination. The modification would involve routing a pocket in the face frame where a face frame adapter mounting plate could be attached. This would also involve re-boring the doors for the hinges from your current 3mm TAB to something like a 6mm - 8mm TAB.

If the light issue is only visible at the end of a cabinet run (where the 3/16” gap is most evident) you might consider (If possible at this point) adding a finished end panel that would extend beyond the front edge of the face frame to the front edge of the door.

There are "dust seal" gaskets available for cabinetry but these are really only designed to be fitted between 2 butt doors at the handle side.

My first thought was what John said! I didn't say it but gave my thoughts. She does seem like the type that will give you trouble.

You could give your customer a pair of sun glasses and a bottle of tequila. She'll forget about the light completely. Happy 4th of July!!

Now correct me if i am wrong guys...especially Dennis..(and i know this does not get to a 1 3/8" over lay) BUT, cant you get about 1 3/16" overlay with a Salice 40 mm strait arm hinge CFA7A99 and a 0mm plate?

I have some in stock but cant quite remember.
It is on my list to make samples showing how diffirent hinges can be used to solve problems.
I have also used Salice 40 mm hinges to solve problems with KV pocket door hardware.

Dennis i am in need of new Salice catalogs...just looked and mine are from around 2008. What do i need to do to get new catalogs?

Oh and i will be drinking some tequilla later..Happy 4th!

Just looking thru a 2008 catalog some more and noticed the Double Cam Large overlay face frame applications base plates part #BAM3R09 ... this still in production? Face frame needs bored out. Looks interesting! Up to 1 9/16" overlay.

Did i mention i need new catalogs..and some stickers, and pencils?

Hey "Shop Door Guy",

You are correct about the F Series use for large overlays. You could get to a 33mm overlay here using the 1mm frame adapter plate. I say 1mm plate because there is no 0mm face frame adapter plate. He would also need to fill and re-bore for the hinges since the edge bore distance would need to be 15mm.

The BAM3R09 mounting plate is still in production and is commonly used for large overlays on a face frame. This would be another solution for TB but could be a real challenge to accomplish if the kitchen is already installed. It is best suited if planned for in advance and the frames are bored out prior to assembly.

This plate is particularly useful if you are using 1-1/4" overlay compact hinges throughout the job and you now need a 1-1/4" overlay for the 165 degree hinge on the lazy Susan cabinet. This is the primary the reason it was developed in the first place.

If you want to have your catalogs updated just send me an email with your address and phone #. I will see that you are updated.

What do you mean by "stickers"?

I build face frame cabinets with 1/2" overlay doors. I have always wondered why you would want to use doors that overlay 1 3/8" on a face frame. Is it so the frame shows a minimum amount to appear like frameless cabinets? Just wondering.

I've often wondered why build a face frame when you want it to look like a frame-less? All the fooling around to adapt a hardware system that was developed for Euro boxes just complicates a nicely designed set of hardware.
We always try to use Salice institutional hinges when we can talk the designers into the horrors of seeing a hinge knuckle. Nice full opening (180 or 270 on ends.) No broken doors from over travel. Never use the 165's where they will actually get used!

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
