Horizontal Boring

Hi Everyone,
As we move toward doweling, I've always been told to do my horizontal boring after edge banding (all my face boring is done on the CNC). It would seem to be more accurate if I bored before banding to eliminate any tolerances due to banding thickness inconsistencies or even just using an array of banding thicknesses out there. How do you guys handle this? Is there something I'm not taking into account here? Thanks is advance!

Stewart,
I think it's more accurate to H bore after banding. Here's why; you are referencing off the banding for all parts at the H bore machine. This ensures that any variation ends up at the back of your cabinet, not at the front edge. If done as above, any variations with the edge banding are accounted for. Granted any difference should be negligible, but aim small miss small.

I drill everything (cnc) before edgeband. I don't want a chance that something the edgebander left behind might affect the dimension.

Banding first provides a valuable visual reference when boring - the banded (or raw, e.g. for fractional face offsets) edge always goes against a boring side fence (or back fence stop).
Banding first also helps to prevent damage to fragile edge corners.

Thanks for your responses! It sounds like there are some different philosophies out there - it gives me something to chew on as we figure this out. I was reading on one of the other threads here that panel squareness is an absolute must since there is no fudge room in doweling. I'm not concerned about machining parts square since we use a CNC but am having some issues from time to time with panel tension which can slightly skew things. How do you guys handle this or am I the only one that has issues with panel tension (both domestic and import - it doesn't seem to matter)? I run both Columbia Purebond and 19MM birch on a calibrated core. The side fence on the HB only allows for 90 degrees from what I understand. How do you handle this? It seems to me you would have to be perfectly flat on both fences 100% of the time to make this work.

We bore after banding, avoiding the use of plywood whenever possible.
