Ref heights

For 25 years I have left ref enclosure heights 71" ( not talking about built ins or commercial units but home depot and Lowes stuff) this has always worked even with tile 3/8" thick tile/wood floors added later . In the last month Ive ran into two refs that where about 72" tall at the front. What are everyone else leaving or do you make irt custom per every job?

We put a 1.5” drop lip on a 4” piece of matching plywood and screw it to the under the cabinet. It adds a design element and can be totally removed or trimmed down later.

I make the opening to fit each jobs appliances much less risk of a problem and it does not take more time . In fact I typically will not begin the job until I have a full set of appliance specs in hand.

I always prefer to have the specs on the actual refrigerator being used but if I don't I always leave 37" X 72".
Luckily I haven't been bitten yet. I just make sure and ask if they will be using a basic frig and not a Subzero or something.

With the plethora of appliances on the market today, i would never even start on drawings till i had the appliance list and reviewed every spec sheet carefully. I will often visit one of the top appliance stores to actually see the appliances on display. i wish that plumbers and electricians studied these guides as well. I am often held up on completing an install where custom panels are required because they have put electrical boxes or plumbing for water or drain lines wherever they decided. Sometimes i have to remove cabinets because other trades did not do their homework and they sure as hell are not going to pay me for the extra work.
Happy holidays everyone!

Keith, I feel your pain buddy. I actually had a post about this a few months back but it was about the depth and not the height.
For 20 years I’ve made my height 71” also and it’s always worked, I appreciate the heads up that they are making them taller. Since the spring I’ve decided that I have to have the specs on everything before I design. I’ve been having my clients send me model numbers and I pull it up online and screenshot it. Don’t take the homeowners word on the specs, most don’t know what they’re even looking at. If you are building a box for the fridge pay close attention to the depth, I’ve ran on to a couple that was 40” deep including the doors. Crazy... the homeowners that bought it couldn’t even reach things that were in the back of it.

We require specs on all fridges.
72" sounds off for a standard fridge. Maybe it was a counter depth?

they arnt counterdepth units but the new ones with the TV like screen on the front have a very big hinge box that is tall but also goes back from the front of the case 6-8 inchs the case from about a third of the way back is still short and still about 69 3/4" tall I also ran into the same large "hinge box on a ref that dint have the TV screen Most of my customers arent buying built ins or higher end units and like the idea of an opening that will accommodate other units in the future or are spec buiders who dont provide the ref so i guess ill just start leaving a larger hole
