Whatever you do, do NOT give up hope! And I disagree that you are now limited to multi-million dollar homes. Instead, the times change, and we must all change with the times! I will be giving an educational session on this very topic next year at AWFS in Las Vegas. Your post describes the exact person who will be a perfect member of that audience!
The following is NOT meant to be a sales pitch for Cabinet Pro software. It is truly meant to answer your frustrations and keep you in business doing what you love: custom cabinetry! We have spent years trying to figure out how to keep our small to medium custom cabinet shops competitive, as I am sure our competitors, such as Cabinet Vision, have also done. And I am very happy to report that I believe we have helped a great deal in this area. Here's some of what you can do with the software that should become the most important tool in your shop:
1. Let a software package that is designed for your kind of shop take control of pricing!!! Make sure your software package prices out cabinets, installation, labor, doors, drawers, hardware, and other aspects of your job AUTOMATICALLY as you design. Most cabinet makers get nickel-&-dimed to death. A good software package will eliminate this problem. And instead of one bid, let your software give THREE bids: a low bid, a medium bid, and a high bid...all with explanations that tell your potential customer why they are different so he/she can compare apples to apples when comparing with other shops. Make sure your software package can give 3 ACCURATE bids in about 5 minutes, otherwise you will be spending too much time on something that may or may not translate to income.
2. Get a CNC router! It doesn't have to be the most expensive router or a super fast router, but it should be at least a 4x8 table w/ a tool changer and vacuum hold-down. Even for a custom face frame and/or frameless shop this will keep your costs down and your efficiency up!
3. Change your construction methods and machining to something that is unique, strong, and aesthetic. My personal favorite is blind dado construction, which is described in the video uploaded along with this post. Only a software package can truly machine parts made of material with varying thicknesses such that the dados are not only hidden, but that flush joints are made when intersecting another part!!
4. Make sure your software package can give high quality 3D Renderings, dimensioned wall elevations, and dimensioned shop drawings. You should use your software to produce an impressive and professional Presentation Document that you can easily email to your current and potential customers.
5. Treat each customer as if he/she is your only customer....regardless of the size of that customer's job or potential job. One of the biggest areas that you have control over and that bigger companies sometimes fall short on is CUSTOMER SERVICE.
6. A relatively inexpensive CNC router coupled with a software package designed for custom cabinet shops will still be a significant purchase. But the two working together, along with computerizing your presentations, pricing, and bidding, will bring your overhead down, your costs down, your efficiency up, and your professionalism up to give you an entirely new feeling of success and hope!
7. You will find, with your costs being slashed and your efficiency going thru the roof, that your profits will increase to the point where you can actually AFFORD TO CUT YOUR PRICES to be even more competitive than you are today. If you can offer CUSTOM cabinets at a LOWER price than the larger companies in your area, I guarantee that people will choose your services over those of your competition.
In a nutshell, Do not despair, do not give up hope, and do not become bummed out. Instead, take this as an opportunity to change your business practices to become more competitive, more service oriented, more efficient, and more professional. Sometimes, when we are feeling discouraged, it might help to stand up with a positive attitude and be reminded by Jerry Butler's words, that, "Only the Strong Survive!"
Have a great day, and a new beginning!
