festool or felder bander
7/9/18
I operate a medium-sized custom millwork shop. We mostly build custom wood doors and also provide millwork installation services. We build some custom cabinetry but we do not, generally, take on kitchens or large cabinet jobs. Our edgebander seems to have taken it's last breath. Does anyone own and operate either the Festool or Felder portable edgebander. Each seems like a good fit for our shop. I will need to produce a quality glue line but high production is a low priority for us. I can't see investing $20K in a new staionary bander

I use the Festool bander maybe a few times a month for curved parts. Pros: it heats up fast, does a decent job, puck glue is cleaner than granules, and Festool dealers are easier to find than Felder dealers. Cons: price. I haven't used the Felder but it looks clunkier & lower-tech than the Festool.

I didnt have a felder specifically, but most of those brand are pretty much the same. I hated mine from the day I got it. I bought the Festool and it is 300 times nicer than the glue pot one I had. The difference in price will pay for itself in ease of use, maintenance and quality of edgebanding applied.
The price difference is minimal compared to some of the other offeringa they have.

We use a Festool for curved work. It is a quality piece. We also bought the trimmer after demoing it. It is also very pricy but it does a great job.
The Festool will work for you when you need it. There is a kit to build it into a table. I would also buy the kit it makes it easier to use for straight work and you can easily pull it out for curved work.
