Use Of PreMill on Bander
8/21/18
We just got our first bander with premill.
Just wondering how much to take off.
We only run 3/4 melamine on particle board.
We use 95% 2mm edgebanding.
Should I just cut parts to size and mill off 2mm?
Is this too much?
I am looking for pro's and Con's of taking the width of the edgebanding or taking a smaller amount.

I take off .5mm regardless of the thickness of banding I'm putting on. I don't see the advantage of taking off more. You'd just generate more sawdust for your bander's dust collection to pick up, and add wear & tear to the premill cutters. In my case I use Cabinet Vision and can tell it how much the premill station shaves off, so it does the math for me.

We take off what we need to dress the edge that is all. Off the router with good core not used With mdf core and slippage 1/2 mil.
On counter tops we use 1/2 to a full 1
mil

We cut our doors net size - and set the premill to remove the thickness of the banding. Same as cabinet parts. Works like a charm

FWIW, I've been advised not to take off less than 1mm. The issue is there is not enough chip load to cool the cutters, thus reducing their life span.
