Ranger board vs Plum Creek/Weyhouser
3/8/19
Hello. I supplied a contractor with bare mdf panels made out of plum creek weyhouser MDF for a wainscoting project. The contractor is adding paneling now above the other panels so they extend to the ceiling. My supplier now only carries Ranger Board in premium and platinum grades. I have heard this is a much better product. My question is how does it mill compared to the other brand. Is it so dense that it mills harder? What’s the difference between platinum and premium? My supplier was not of much help in offering advise. Thanks in advance

I've used thousands of sheets of Plum Creek and Ranger products. Important to know that Ranger owned the "premium" MDF market many years ago and then Plum Creek came along and did a far superior marketing job and took over the premium market. anyway on to your question Ranger Premium (for me) is almost identical to Plum Creek in working and painting characteristics and if you look at the spec sheets for both products they are also almost identical. I used Ranger Platinum a few times it was quite a bit more costly and i didn't notice any discernible difference in painting or machining, in my case Platinum wasn't worth the extra cost.
