Im in southern California, interested in the possibility of ordering my doors pre primed as i have noticed im going through tons of primer these days. Ive checked through one supplier and they almost want $10 per coat per square foot. Is this the going rate? I am also interested to know if I can purchase such a thing as pre primed mdf...Any thoughts and info is appreciated.

I don't know anything about pre-primed doors but it is possible to reduce your primer use with a change in process.
Onmy first prime coat I spray just enough to wet the surface - barely any colour change. Edges get the same treatment. Wait til dry and then spray an opaque coat. The first dust light coat blocks the following coat from disappearing into the mdf.
I see my prime coats as a chance to catch and fix flaws. If the doors arrive primed and still need work then I would have to prime again.

I prime twice. Probably a little heavier than you on the first coat Tom. Im hoping for a small savings in a few areas here. It would eliminate one handling, reduce my primer consumption, and give me a little time savings no?

I like trhe idea of saving time particularly in the the booth. Spraying is my least favorite part of the job. But $10 per foot seems to be very high. I pay that for a full finish. A 2 square foot door would be $40 finished.
