edge bander chipping

hi
We have an SCM edgebander. When we scrape the glue line by hand during the cleaning process the board chips, looking closely the panel has small cracks on the surface that chip when cleaned . We have moved the cutters further away from the material, but it is still doing it. We have also checked the quality of the panel prior to edging, any ideas?

You dont say if your cutting with CNC but if you are something to look for is if you get a nick in your tool right at the laminate it will leave the laminate proud of the core then when the panel goes through the bander the pressure roller after the glue station crushes the small lip of melamine/laminate as it goes through.
You may inspect your panels and see if the face is proud of the core at all and inspect your tool (if CNC) with a loop.

What mark said but also when I have that problem it’s from the premilling unit basically doing the same thing. I just move the heads down or up abit so I get a clean cut. Melamine is hard on those cutters and they wear out at that point. But I’m not sure if you have premium…

Pre-mill. Auto correct again.

Mark has given you great advice if you are using a CNC to size your panels. If you are using a table or beam saw you could have an alignment issue with your arbor and the trailing edge of the blade may be chipping the melamine/laminate.
On another note if you are cleaning your glue line, scraping panels, or trimming edges it's time to save labor hours and consider a new edgebander.

Rob may be onto something but who knows what your process/situation is. I run an older bander here but Ive fiddled with it enough and spent enough time on the line with Holz-her that I think I have a pretty in-depth understanding of the bander but we get results like the image attached straight off the machine regularly. That image is right off the end of the bander, no hand work, no solvent, nothing. PVC on PB core laminate.
I read alot about all kinds of handwork/cleanup which I can possibly see if your running a job with 3mm PVC thats spec'd with rounding all around and you have a bander that just corner rounds and scrapes but thinking of having to hand scrape every part would seem a collosal nightmare.

Daniel,
As an aside, we dont have pre-mill but Ive often wondered about what you mention moving the cutters up/down to extend the life with a chip/wear at the laminate.
Few questions... how wide are the pre-milling cutters? I can easily see starting with setting them low (top edge of laminate is close to the top edge of the cutter) then you continually raise the pre-mill until your out of bottom side cutting. But can you move the chip into the core of the material and still have good results? I guess Im wondering how many moves to you get out of a set of knives on the pre-mill on average and then do you have a pretty good idea of how many feed of banding you can run before you need to move the pre-mill so you dont adjust after bad parts?

So my cutters are 1.75” wide but I’d guess without actually checking I can go 2-2.5” easily if a person would want to. And I have diamond cutters I don’t think I would even bother with anything else because I believe it’s pretty important to achieve a nice glue line… although that picture of yours does look nice even without premill
Basically that’s what I do like you explained but if your running half inch for like drawers that kind of messes with the pattern as well but it works fairly well. I don’t run it everyday to know how many feet I actually get before moving but I just keep an eye on the quality if it starts getting rough I’ll go move it a bit. Never had a issue with the it in the pb core I’d say it’s not that the cutters are chipped but just dull enough to make a rough cut on the laminate.
That said having it on the machine is for sure a game changer I wouldn’t want to be without it.
