Anyone have any idea where or if I can purchase 1.5 inch thick plywood? We have a lot of small pieces to make (in the thousands) that will be roughly 2"x4"x1.5 inches. If it is not available (haven't found any yet) then would a vacuum bag and pump work for making our own with two sheets of 3/4? If so which system would work best. Thanks

Look at veneer systems ( they usually have an add in Veneer forum )
The red Vacupress pump and any of the frame presses or bags will work. You might want to rip the sheet in half and then glue together . A 1.5", 4' x 8' gets heavy.

You will have to press that yourself. Vac bag wil work great

Thanks for the responses. Do you think the Raptor with plastic nails would work for this application?

Do you like shopping online? I think you can look at the lumber market, there are many suppliers to choose from, or you can just google and you can find some good suppliers.

If your 3/4" plywood is dead flat and the glue spread is very even, then you might get away with polymer nails. But dead flat plywood has become a bit of a unicorn.

Rich,
I am not sure what you are talking about. I shot three unicorn last week. Smoked em am froze em. Good for the next year. Seriously that is exactly what I was thinking. Guess it is time to finally by a vacume pump and bags. Thanks all....long live Woodweb...hopefully

Could you not have someone glue two 3/4” together and press them in like one of those laminate presses where they can fit in a whole unit of plywood? Or wouldn’t you know anyone that does that around you? I guess we have a guy here close to us that does stuff like that.

would it make any sense to break them down to smaller pieces and then glue and clamp them together. Or would that be to time consuming ?

I don't know of anyone around us that has a machine like that but I will ask. Thanks

Nicko, that would probably make a stronger joint than polymer nails. We do have over 50 sheets and it would too labor intensive for this job.

What you would be looking for is someone who manufactures SIP panels if you know what that is? They use that setup to glue the fiberglass, poly, and foam to the plywood. But it also works great for just glueing sheets together.

Daniel, That makes sense. Not sure if there is one here in Knoxville but it would be worth the drive to Atlanta or somewhere if they would do it. We are going to look into this process. Thanks

I would check with your local board or laminate supplier and see if they offer laminating services. Even if they don't offer the services they should know who has a laminating line in your area. We have a cold press and would typically laminate up two sheets of ply with backer on the two faces to make up 1 1/2" plywood.
