Edgebander

Hi. I am looking at purchasing my first edgebander. I currently build mostly framed inset, but am looking at making framless for those customers that dont want to spend for inset. I am hesitant to purchase used, so am looking at new. What features, brands, models should I be looking at? Thanks

You asked a great question, but I don’t think you will get a lot of help as the spectrum is massive.

What is your budget ballpark? How many jobs are you going to use it for in a month? What kind of materials are you going to use it for? Do you need to edge with solid wood, if so how thick?
Are you going to do 3 mm pvc with roundover . You can get just top and bottom trimmers with round over, but also end trimmers. Do you require premill?
How many programs and pre determined settings do you need.?

One other important factor is service, I would buy a machine from a company who has service in your area. If it breaks down you will want help immediately, not, we will fly a guy/gal in from Italy two weeks from next Thursday on your dime.

The world is your oyster when it comes to edgebander’s and money talks.

It is similar to buying automobile’s , you can get a Dodge or a Lamborghini or anything in between and each one has a set of features.

Service would be a huge factor
That said, I've run a couple of glue pot machines and for the last several years a Holz Her with cartridge glue system
Personally, I'd never consider anything else.
I bought it used with low hours
Moved and set it up myself, though if I'd had the funding, would have had a tech do the initial setup
It's tuned well however and holds tolerance well.
I'd steer clear of the PLC control if buying used.
When the go out,the machine is basically a brick as a used PLC is almost impossible to find and a new one is very, very expensive

Thank you for the feedback. I will probably do 1 frameless project a month to start, but could see it increasing. I am looking at the format 4 tempura 45.03, biesse akron 1100 and holzer artea. Since I don't plan on doing commercial work, I don't think I need corner rounding. I definitely don't want to pay for more machine than I need, but I also don't want to upgrading in a year.

Ben,

Sounds great, you probably would be served well with any of those as it sounds like you just need the basic configuration.

I can’t comment on any of those as I have no experience with any of them. I have owned older holtzer and SCM and currently run Brandt. There are dealers in my area for SCM and Brandt so that is why I chose them. One think to consider is some edgebander a run left to right with your work piece and some work right to left. I have heard people say one works better than the other for the layout of return conveyors or other equipment in the shop.

I wouldn’t be scared to purchase used for your situation, you just need to have it checked out before you purchase, there are a lot of good used machines that small shops have owned.

Be hesitant on used, they are being sold for a reason and you don’t want to become a great edge bander tech.
Vantedge has a great starter machine that is simple to operate and in English. Ed the owner has 40 years experience in banders and has designed great machines I have the larger 6.5 and it’s great.

Where are you located exactly? I import Edgebanders from Turkey, I visited the AyzaMizrak factory this past may and was really impressed by their quailty and simplicity of design. I used to be a serivce guy for Holz-Her and Homag and have working on edgebanders for over 25 years and when I saw what the Turks were building i was really surprised. Whatever you do STAY AWAY from edgebanders made in China, not only will they never answer the phone much less be able to communicate with you, the quality (the ones Ive seen) has been shockingly flimsy and can barely hang on for dear life when doing 3mm for any length of time.

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.
  • Participants are encouraged to use their real name when posting. Intentionally using another persons name is prohibited, and posts of this nature will be removed at WOODWEB's discretion.
  • Comments, questions, or criticisms regarding Forum policies should be directed to WOODWEB's Systems Administrator

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).

The staff of WOODWEB assume no responsibility for the accuracy, content, or outcome of any posting transmitted at WOODWEB's Message Boards. Participants should undertake the use of machinery, materials and methods discussed at WOODWEB's Message Boards after considerate evaluation, and at their own risk. WOODWEB reserves the right to delete any messages it deems inappropriate. (return to top)
