Finally going to do some dado'ing on a horizontal slider.

Long story longer, I generally don't do a lot of case work (Mostly solid wood) but when I have to do dados it's usually router and template. I've always looked at the slider and though this was a no brainer, digital stops, Tiger Stop, how easy could that be, unbelievable accuracy and repeatability. The problem was setting up the blades. A couple of years ago I scored an old stock Systimatic Fine dado set. Had them bored and sharpened. The only hang-up was the dowel pins. On a conventional TS just stagger your blades, with dowels the alignment is a little different. With the dado set I'm using it's a 6 wing set so by drilling 2 sets of holes 90 degrees apart allows the stagger. Hoping to try this out in the next day or two.

So came across an issue. I finished drilling everything then mounted the blades. The unthreaded portion on the spindle is a little over .690 long. So trying to get to .750 the last blade is not happening because it's not fully seated on the spindle. Worse case on anything over 5/8 would require 2 cuts. The paint grade maple I just worked with for an order measured .740.

One solution would be to have an arbor extension made.
Picture below is from my vintage Martin short stroke slider. It’s a little different since the slider table is away from the main table. This one will take over 2 1/4” of dado or shaper cutter. You would have to make sure the arbor extension doesn’t interfere with the sliding table.

My full format slider will take 32mm of dado or shaper cutter. It’s a different system where a bushing is removed from the arbor to get the space. Third picture. It takes 10 minutes to set up so I usually use the older saw. We are mostly solid wood also. I use a 15 to 30mm adjustable groover in both saws and get extremely clean cuts. I have that same Systimatic dado you do and think I will have it bored so I can do less than 15mm wide. Those were some of the best dado sets ever made.

Hey Joe,

Thanks for the great photos. Yes, an extension would solve the problem. That's something I can make down the road. I would also need a spacer between the nut and outside flange. But it is doable. Thanks again
