Router Speed Controller

Thanks in advance. I bought a 3" diameter router bit to make some custom molding. I use a Porter Cable router, motor model 690, in my router table. The router has "brushes". By definition is it an induction motor? In any case I would appreciate a recommendation for a router speed controller that will work with this PC router. I bought a controller that specifies it isn't suitable for induction motors. It failed to work, not slowing the bit. Thoughts???

The router has a universal motor which is different from an induction motor. There are router speed controllers available. Try looking at Rockler or Woodcraft.

Hi Tom, and Thanks for the input. In all seriousness 'cause I've invested time in learning about induction motors and how they differ from the normal router. I have tried the Big Horn speed controller with the Porter Cable router with brushes and a Makita router (7 amp) without brushes, no difference and zero speed control. So what is different with the Rockler and Woodcraft controllers? How do they accomplish speed control when others don't?

That is something I don't know. I regret not taking the electronics classes in high school

Just buy a variable speed router? You can never have too many routers in the shop.

Hello All - Thanks for the feedback. At the end of the "day" ((week actually)), I concluded time and research was not bringing or solving my issue, so I did buy a variable speed router. I typically don't like throwing money at a problem, but this was the right answer. Harbor Freight Hercules router - surprisingly a quality unit. I now have a herd of 5 routers.

When you run a professional business, tools and machinery MAKE you money, you are not throwing money at a problem. You charge the customer a rate that pays for the machinery, it costs you nothing. I don't think you understand how a business works yet.
A Harbor Freight router is NOT a quality unit as you will find out shortly spinning a 3" diameter bit. You just bought a throw away knockoff. Cheap tools are not just magically cheaper. There is a reason it costs that much less.
