Range Hood Build
8/23/25
I first posted this back in April I have finally actually started building it. I have built it real similar to the one Leo has posted on here. When I took the job the contractor said that it was to be painted now, he is coming back saying no no it needs to be rift cut white oak. I have already ordered 1/8" Italian poplar for the skin coat going to double layer it. Now my biggest problem is I contacted a veneer supplier and asked about veneering this with the white oak, and he replied that the 1/8" Italian poplar would not be ridged enough to apply that over time it would bubble up in spots on me. I feel I have enough webbing built in this hood to support it but now I'm double guessing myself your thoughts please.
As far as the bottom part of the hood I am able to remove the piece of 6" high maple and replace with white oak rift cut.

If I remember correctly, Leo suggested gluing and stapling/nailing flexible ply to the rib structure. I don't see any reason why you cannot get a strong glue bond for the veneer onto 1/8" ply. I would not use contact cement for a range hood. The additional heat, potential grease and oils from cooking and frequent cleaning will weaken the cement.
Press the oak veneer to the 1/8" ply flat. I would apply a backer veneer. It will still be flexible enough to bend to shape.

Thanks Tom if I didn’t choose to put a backer on this wouldn’t it be just as good to spray a couple coats of Lacquer on the outside inside wouldn’t that seal it off. And what would you suggest for a glue I’m a little worried about having enough time with epoxy getting everything the way I want it and clamped up. I have a little bit more webbing to put in on my hood and I will post it . Thanks again

The reason fot the back veneer is to keep the plywood flat after glue-up.
A slow setting epoxy would give you lots of time to fit the pieces. Will there be any trim applied after? If so then use staples where the trim will be
Maybe someone will chime in to say that contact will be fine - I have stayed away from it not from my experience but what I have seen in the field.

This should be supported enough for the double layer of 1/8” plywood
