AutoCad LT

I used Cabnetware Detailer to design and produce cut list and that has gone away. I used AutoCad LT for anything that was beyond what Cabnetware could do now that program wont load onto a new computer that replaced the old one. I had the CD from 2013 but it wont accept the codes on the CD package and AutoCad the company ( Autodesk I am guessing) no longer honors what they sold. I paid 900 for the program and now they don't offer the CD its 900 +_ per year.

My question is, is there a way to find out if they programed a certain amount of years into the program so that it would no longer load after a certain date?

My thinking on it is if they did that it should have been disclosed before selling it to an unaware buyer. It seems that AutoCad LT is not the only program and 2013 is not the only year they may have done that as I have seen many posts of others with that same issue.

I bought a Jura brand espresso machine in 2012 and I have paid to have it repaired and that is normal with things that wear out due to mechanical issues, Software should not wear out and install codes for the CDs should never stop working.

What are your thoughts?

Don't pay for AutoCAD, their subscription model hurts.
I haven't paid for any subscription licenses since 2015, when Sketchup/AutoCAD tried it out.

If you want perpetual licensed new CADs, there are plenty of those. There must be dozens of AutoCAD clones around the world - BricsCAD, AllyCAD, NanoCAD, et al. Use those.

I had a similar drama with my Sketchup Pro license - the server used to validate the codes, is no longer operated. So you're frozen out. It's not to do with the date.

Thanks i will give one of those a try

Anything up to AutoCAD 2019, after which Autodesk went to subscription mode, will theoretically not load on a Windows 10 or 11 PC. That is as intended by Autodesk in order to force people onto the subscription model. However many people have managed to get those earlier versions to load on Windows 10 and I even managed to keep my 2014 LT version working when I upgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 11. I was told that it would eventually lock up but after over a year that hasn't happened. So it can be done.

Another option is to purchase an installation assistance program from Longbow software. They specialize in work arounds for older software on newer operating systems, and have an AutoCAD LT package available at a reasonable cost.

My understanding is that the software gets hung up waiting for a response from a server that is no longer there or does not have the correct url. That it's's not just Acad lite.

I concur with the previous comments. It's not worth the hassle and just switch to something else if at all possible and run away and never cone back. LoL

Some of the options mentioned are possibly better and cheaper at the same time.

"Innovation" is where I see the value of a subscription based licencing model. My opinion is that they want people to pay them to innovate new ways to leverage the learning curve and deployment to get more money. Clearly, we are looking for easy and simple.

You can get a full perpetual seat of BricsCAD and that should l get you a few years down the road.

By then new tech will be available.

I just don't see any real benefit using it now, even if it were completely free.

Remember to image your drives and test the images. That can help provide transition time by getting one up an running should one have a system crash and need to reinstall. It's so important.
Windows Backup: Macrium, Veeam and RescueZilla are possible options.

I just use Samsung SSDs and their cloning software for my backups. I've found theirs to be the cleanest and easiest cloning software I've tried.

There is an endless stream of problems of all kinds like this all over the internet.

People would be in the clear and driving down the road knowing full well the expected lifetime of their software and be able to make it to transition destination more comfortably if they did basic minimal maintenance.

It's like an oil change for a car.
If we don't change the oil ourselves or get someone else to it for us, then the engine is probably not going to last as long.

The company that owns Bricscad does the same thing with their perpetual licenses and the whole situation is generally called a "sunset license". People don't understand when you tell them to learn to image their drives so that they can do a full restore in minutes, and to test that, and take it all seriously, and even stress it.

They generally don't listen or they find an excuse to not have already taken the time, then look for a quick out. We have all been there I think.

It's worth paying for an oil change, back up software, if you chose to not do it yourself, of you business depends on it. It's not a tax. It's some insurance coverage.

This includes blowing out the fans and boxes for dust and protecting them from the elements, cyberthreats, good power supplies, replacing worn fan motors and all the rest.

While we can't just replicate a car engine that didn't get it's oil changed, we can easily replicate a digital footprint of an operating system with software installed and restore it. Keep in control of your software. Feel free pour Coca-Cola in and give it a good swift kick if need be and if it doesn't work then toss it in the trash.

I have several of those SSD's. Thank you.

Can the images be mounted in a virtual machine? A lot of people are using those now and they are handy for testing in controlled environments.

Samsung software will do drive images or full blown clones. I use the clone feature. If I have a hard drive failure in a PC, which has happened a couple of times over the decades, I just swap out the SSD and I'm back where I started in a matter of 15 to 30 minutes........minus any files of course that were created since the last clone backup was done.

I'm afraid I don't know much about virtual machines. Never did anything with that. But if you can take any fully functional system HDD and use it there then it would also work with the clones.

Virtualization here's the big hole that the software companies can't do anything about at this time.

While there is indeed a performance hit, many things will work for a period of time and can be quickly reset in the time it takes to boot a computer. There are certainly licensing issues there. Just because one can doesn't mean that they should. With with licensed software it's perfectly legal and always there and useable on any decent machine. Windows, mac or Linux.

I know of someone using Parallels to virtualize a full Windows 11 install on a Mac with a 32bit AutoCAD 2018 installed and all legal and licensed. Unbelievably, it works for them.

Another person was running old Frameworks on a Windows 7 machine running Dosbox. Whatever it takes....

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
