I have to replace my computer and am not a fan of windows 10. Does anyone know if Cabnetware version 8 will work with Apple OS??

Thanks, Joe :-)

One line question deserves a one line answer. No, it will not.

For motivation, I will state that I have been running Windows programs on my MacBook Pros using Parallels Desktop for about 10 years now. I use Windows 10, but my Windows desktop looks like Windows 7 or Windows XP because I don't like the tiles in 10.

Next time, put specific info and thought in your post if you want a substantial answer that addresses your concerns. This vehicle isn't limited like texting or Twitter. To all of you who ask one line questions: If you are not going to bother to explain your situation, why should I bother to answer your vague question?

You answered my question, Thank you :-). I am a cabinetmaker not a computer geek. I have no desire to spend time playing around and manipulating another program to make Cabnetware work on a mac, that having been said there is really no reason for rudeness in your reply.
I would suggest you not answering at all if that is how you feel.

The world today is really taking a turn for the worse when it comes to how humans interact, :-(

Rich i am curious... what more information should he of had to his question to make it worth while answering?
He stated he needs to replace his computer, doesn't like windows 10 and asked if Cabinetware version 8 will work with the apple operating system os? Are you having a bad day and taking it out via your keyboard?

Great reply. I actually had to think about what I was saying in my reply because it made me very angry :-(

Did the answer "no it will not" solve Joe's problem?

What doesn't Joe like about Windows 10? What did he use prior to Windows 10? How long has Joe been using Cabnetware? Why the interest in Apple OS? What other programs does Joe use? What kind of computer does Joe have now? What level of computer experience does Joe have? What other alternatives has Joe considered?

I did describe how I do use a Windows based CAD program in the Apple environment to offer how it is possible. Then we find out Joe doesn't want to invest the effort to make it work.

There is always more to a situation than can be conveyed in a simple one line question. If someone is asking for help, more context helps someone craft a better response.

I apologize if I came across rude, but I was trying to be concise as well as offer a larger perspective.

Yes, the world is taking a turn for the worse, when people are so easily insulted first and and then don't try to understand someone else's perspective. I made a suggestion to forum users in general how to get better answers. Could I have worded it differently? Absolutely! The reader could also try to understand the point and not get in a dander either.

rich, i don't understand why you took that approach.. but joe, to rich's point, you can successfully run windows software on a mac with parallels or VMware. it's absolutely viable, and "technically sound." my previous career was as a software engineer, and owner of a software consulting company, and we had 20 developers, some writing high-end windows software (and for other platforms), all on macs via such emulation. i currently run CNC and cabinet design software on VMWare fusion on my macs, and it's perfect. don't hesitate to buy a mac if that's the platform you prefer.

David, Thanks for the reply. To be truthful I have run Cabnetware for over 20 yrs on windows. But I think Microsoft blew it with Windows 10. I have had apple in the past and I don't really want to have to deal with software issues. I have been a cabinetmaker for over 40 yrs and it seems more time is spent in the office trying to get the cutlist and cnc to do work correctly. I worked at one shop in Colorado and the guy running the CNC could not even read a tape.
So to Richs rant, Ive been there done that and don't really like it. I like to accomplish things in the shop and bring home the dough :-)
my website is creativecraftsmanwa.com
I am a one man semi retired guy on the south end of life :-)
Again thanks, I appreciate your point of view.
Regards, Joe

We used cabnetware for over 20 years and then went to Mozaik but either way I use a Macbook pro. I have mine running bootcamp which comes installed on Macs. It allows the computer to be booted into windows or Mac. You do have to download windows yourself. It takes about 20 seconds to swap back and forth with newer computers with ssd's. If you have windows running you have no idea you have a Mac, if you are running Mac OS you have no idea there are windows programs on your computer. I use Mac OS for everything except design. I really prefer Mac OS because it runs so smooth and I do a lot of photography so I run adobe products like Lightroom and photoshop.

ryan i am with you - i use Mozaik as well, but i prefer to not reboot. given the fast reboot times on these machines lately, i could see the advantage of going bootcamp.

I went with bootcamp because from what I understand it is faster on the windows side because you are not trying to run a windows based program through another program. All of this is using computer memory which has to slow your computer down. I would have went a different route if I were going to run a simple program like Microsoft Word that does not take much power to run.

Mozaik is the way to go. Cabnetware is based on such old technology that the software had to shut down just due to them not being able to do anything else with it. I didn't like they way they went about it by just stopping to service it completely.

Back when I was doing CW instal and training I had a client that used Mac computers and we never had a problem with the CW software. I made several trips through the years to his shop setting up more parameters and updates for him. Last time I talked to him he was still working fine with the setup.

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.
  • Participants are encouraged to use their real name when posting. Intentionally using another persons name is prohibited, and posts of this nature will be removed at WOODWEB's discretion.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
