Advice on a CNC for cutting internal threads

7/12/18
Thomas

We are a small shop and have been considering a cnc router for some time now. We were about to pull the trigger on one when we picked a new client that requires threaded rods and nuts made out of wood. The rods are one inch diameter with nuts to match. This is repetitive business but not substantial in amount. We currently use wood threaders and taps but this is time consuming.
Does anyone have any experience or advice on purchasing a router that has the capability to cut internal threads or should we be looking at two separate machines?

V-carve Pro software has an add on software gadget to cut internal threads with side cutting v bit. Virtually any cnc machine will do that. For the male threads you will want a 4th axis, essentially a lathe setup with headstock turned by a stepper or servo motor. Several machines offer a 4th axis. Again V carve can take care of the programming.

Camaster has several sizes with a well established rotary cutter on any machine. there are some who do what you want already on the camheads forum

Thanks for the responses. Our biggest concern is whether or not I can do internal threads on a one inch nut. I would like to see one being cut before we purchase a machine. We have been looking at machines but most suppliers don't have the capabilities to demonstrate this.

I am no expert as i have no reason to make this, I have seen it done, in the last few seconds i did make the file. the inside thread would just have to be programed in a gadget, might take me a few more minutes but i gotta get to work !

What your looking for is called thread milling.

Are you making the entire nut of threading a blank?

Can use a single point or multipoint tool.

Do you think you will be able to tap the threads in the nut faster on a CNC than a 1" NC tap? Dropouts video shows the way it is done on a milling machine. Those will be for high tech parts where you have unique tolerance spec (expensive). You need to pay close attention to the fixture they are using and then think about the quantity you need to make. If you are talking very small quantities (say <10 - 20 per run) then this might work, but if larger quantities are needed I am not sure you will be happy with the speed of a typical 3 axis CNC. It would eliminate the manual labor, so that might what is most important to you.

If you want to see how they fixture larger batches of unique small parts in the milling world this link might give you some ideas what is involved: https://www.cnccookbook.com/cnc-jigs-fixtures-workholding-solutions-milling/

I am not sure if the process to thread the dowels will be incredibly fast either on a CNC with a 4th axis. If you can accurately locate a 1" rod and simply mill in the threads, maybe, but I would be doing some research if this is important to you before plunking down money for a fourth axis.

It is easy to think you can do endless things with a 3 axis CNC, and honestly with ingenuity you can in many cases. The question comes down to, does it make good sense for a business application?

Are you sure there is not a supplier out there to supply this part? Markup on a supplied item works out well for some products.

These guys have threaded rod, but no nuts. This link is for 3/4", but I bet they could supply 1".

The spindle speed should also be adjusted so that it is suitable for the material being cut and the desired thread size. If you follow these instructions, you should have no trouble using a CNC machine to cut internal threads. Recently, I had the opportunity to use above the website and I must say that I was quite impressed with the results.
Their staff was extremely competent and professional; they met all of my requirements promptly. Compared to similar services, the cost was also fairly fair. If you're in need of trustworthy work, I definitely recommend Want.net's CNC Machining Service.

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.
  • Participants are encouraged to use their real name when posting. Intentionally using another persons name is prohibited, and posts of this nature will be removed at WOODWEB's discretion.
  • Comments, questions, or criticisms regarding Forum policies should be directed to WOODWEB's Systems Administrator

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).

The staff of WOODWEB assume no responsibility for the accuracy, content, or outcome of any posting transmitted at WOODWEB's Message Boards. Participants should undertake the use of machinery, materials and methods discussed at WOODWEB's Message Boards after considerate evaluation, and at their own risk.
