Tool holders

I'm new to CNC, the router is coming in a month or so. I need help with this toolholder subject ISO 30. Are all tool holders created equal? If I bought a cheaper one for just a drill bit or something could it damage the spindle or cause problems? What brands should I be looking at. Any guidance would be appreciated.

All 30 Taper tool holder are not the same.
If nothing else the top pull studs come in a dozen different flavors. Collets come in different styles too.
Maybe get a couple from the machine manufacturer then look around for compatible ones when you have something in hand to compare with.
As far as drilling we drill with a tool holder and a collet sized to the common drill bits we use, (adjust you feed and spindle to fit).
We also have an Albricht keyless 30 taper drill chuck for oddball sizes of drills we sometime used - letters, number drills in weird sizes.
As far a "cheaper", buyer beware, the thing that spins around at 15K rpm should be balanced and not fly apart.

Everything above (Dylan is a great source for tooling and assistance btw) + in order balance these tool holders, holes are drilled in the body of the tool holder to remove weight. Be careful of where these holes are drilled. If in the flange groove of the tool holder that many manufacturers use to couple to the tool changer, depending on the coupling type it can cause issues. Spot on information on the retention knobs as well, they are very manufacturer specific.

We have run several "off brand" holders. Our spindle is an HSD and as long as your ISO30 spindle has the HSD stud you should be fine. Mind you a BT30 holder will accept the same ER32 collets but will have a different outer diameter if your running ATC. Your forks will not work. That said, If you have some operations for holders that will never see the ATC you can often times pick up high quality BT30 holders for pennies (or less) on the dollar.

No one can argue that skimping on your tool holders can be a risky endeavour but as with everyone, and Im sure it your case, when your wanting to have a few other holders in the rack and you see imports balanced at 24K and up, and then are looking at laying down $175 for basically the same holder, it gets difficult.

We have a bunch of BT30 holders in the rack with HSD studs that we use for special operations. We have some import ISO 30 holders in the ATC that have never given us a lick of trouble. I wish they were all from the US high dollar sources but people gotta do what they gotta do.

Reference the attached picture, it is of a fixed elevating tool holder within a changer but some carousel models use the same spring loaded clip design to retain the tool in the fork. If the balance holes are drilled within the groove, you run the risk of damaging the pin and literally breaking the tool changer. This typically will not be the issue with newer model tool changers that use plastic forks that hold the tool holder primarily with compression.

FWIW: A lot of the USA companies are OEM'ing their ISO toolholders (at least) from SYIC anyway.

Hi Steve, not all ISO 30 tool holders are the same. The ISO30 cone part are the same, 7:24, but the pull stud not the same. Different spindle make use different tool grippers, so the pull stud should be matched. Normally there are 3 main ISO30 tool holder pull studs, from 3 spindle brands: Italy HSD, Colombo, Elte. Different CNC router manufacturer choose different spindle, so when buy a ISO30 tool holder, we have to check the pull stud should be matched.

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
