1mm wood edgeband peeling right off, Homag S240_4.4Servo

We have a Homag S240_4.4Servo and are currently having a problem with 1mm wood edgeband peeling off far too easily. Problem does not persist if we swap out the 1mm wood for 1mm PVC.

The panel stock is 3/4" standard grade MDF core. The problem is repeatable using Walnut and Maple (and probably others, we just haven't tried them all). Problem persists regardless of whether we send the 1mm wood through the edgebander as usual, or flip it around so the face is applied to the panel.

The 1mm is standard 1mm off-the-shelf stock. The walnut is old stock that previously was fine, so I'm not thinking the problem is with the edgeband. Neither edgeband has any coatings on the backside. Just normal wood veneer.

Wood EB thickness varies from 0.92mm to 0.98mm which is within tolerance.

We are using Dorus KS351 at 195C temp.

When you peel the wood off, you can still see the glue pattern in the wood. The problem is not glue quantity.

Air temperature in the shop is mid 50's so it's neither cold nor hot. We've been fairly warm lately, we are in the Southeast.

Has anyone experienced this before?

I have no advice for you about your delamination issue. But mid 50s in a shop is pretty cold as far as I'm concerned. But like you said it probably isn't an issue for the machine.

Maybe bring the shop up to 63ºF for a while and test the machine to see if it produces a quality bond. Could just be the shock of the 50ish degree substrates cooling the glue to quickly to form a strong bond.

I would suggest speaking to the Homag tech support people and asking if they would recommend a suitable glue.Is it possible that the glue in use has degraded due to long term storage?

Routalot, that's what we did and they sent over a tech that got us going properly. However I'm kinda bugged by it because the tech did seemingly the same thing we tried the day before, except it worked when he did it, and it didnt' work the day before.

All he did was turn the glue on to reverse rotation, which applies more glue. We tried that the day prior, and the band still peeled off and it didn't have the appearance that the band had been pressed on properly, you could still see the wheel rotation pattern in the glue, rather than seeing pressed glue. He said that he didn't adjust anything else, but there had to have been something acting differently.

Everything we've banded since then has been great, thankfully. What bugs me further is that we didn't need to run reverse rotation last year on 1mm wood, it held very nicely. And, the previous edgebander we had (for 8 years straight) used the same glue application wheel and the same brand/SKU of glue, and that machine didn't even have reverse rotation for an option, and it was always OK.

The glue we are using is Dorus KS351, which according my edgeband vendor and Stiles, is basically the best possible hot melt glue we can buy for our application.
