multi 10 hp units vs one large dust collector

We are getting ready to put on 2nd production line. We will have two Rover A's with auto load and unload. We use a dedicated Nedderman S1000 (with dump bin) on the first one and it has worked great. Spoilboard gets very clean and the parts come off the conveyor very clean.
I have plenty of 460 power.

My question is should I just add another S1000 or should I look to add a larger single outdoor dust collector?

I have a dedicated Oneida 5hp dust collector for the edgebanders. The high vac works well with the pvc tails on the scrapers, so I don't think I will change that.

Only other large source of dust is a minemally used beam saw, a dovetailer and lots of sweeps.

Custom closet parts so we run mostly 3/4 Melamine on particle board core.

Any input would be appreciated.

Bob,
I think you are at the crossroads of pay now or pay later. I ultimately think a large unit outside for the whole shop is the best, once installed there is no mess in the shop, everything goes in a bin outside, someone else dumps the bin.

The drawback for the big unit outside is they are very expensive, unless you can find a good used one.

The smaller ones inside will do a great job, the Niederman collectors are a great product. The drawback for them is they don’t hold a lot of product so you always have to empty them out, clean up around them afterwards, put the containers back in place, very labour intensive and messy compared to the other system. The initial setup cost will be less, but the labour every two weeks will be ongoing.

The other things to consider are space and heat loss. The footprint of the indoor collectors is quite a bit, if you have tons of space then no big deal.
The big units outside are designed to have the air return, but if you are in a climate where you are -20 Celsius or colder, the air going out through the system will be cooled some. The indoor collectors have zero heat loss.

All the best on your decision.

Scott's reply is on point, I agree with everything he said.

I would add that the outdoor unit is always on 100%. Indoor units are able to be selectively turned off if needed. They use more electricity.

You need to size an outdoor unit for the future. That uses more electricity.

An outdoor unit is expensive. We had three collectors before going to our outdoor unit. The outdoor unit is significantly more than twice as expensive.

An outdoor unit is safer.

Our suction is excellent, everywhere all the time.

We don't dump or clean anything related to the collector. We call and the dust is hauled away.

Air comes back in the building 15 degrees colder then it went out in MI.

Good luck.

indoor $2.50 per cfm
max indoor units 5000cfm per nfpa 664
outdoor closer to $7.00~$9 per cfm

Not knowing the setup of your shop I don't know if this is practical or possible.

If you put rotary air locks on what you have and ran a recirculating loop to a dumpster or hopper outside it would fix the biggest problem with indoor systems, dumping them.

Thanks for the responses.

Dylan, thank for putting it into $$.

1. We have a enough room or 2 or 3 for now.

2. We use the S1000 dump bin and generally dumping 1.5 to 2 a day. Not that big of deal for now.

My conclusion is that we will go with another S1000 this time. Will be planning on a big upgrade with the next production line.

Bob,
How do you like the dump bins? How much are they, who sells these days.
My Niederman is over 10 years old so company I dealt with is no longer around.
One more thing, any idea on the cost?

I have quite a bit of ceiling room so I was thinking about raising the dust collector and fabricating my own dump bin with more capacity?

Bill,
How do those rotary air locks work exactly, that sounds like a really good idea?
Thanks

Love the dump bins.

I think about $4500.
Well worth it.

He helped me out with my duct work.
I think they are a Nedderman dealer.

A rotary airlock is like a revolving door. It allows dust to drop from the collector while not breaking suction.

From there you create a closed loop system. You need a fan and duct running under each collector. The duct also runs through a dumpster in one side of the front out the other. The dust drops out because of gravity. It is not an inexpensive thing to do but stops you from emptying collectors which has great value in my opinion. It may be impossible or at least difficult to do with multiple indoor units.

Oneida sells small rotary airlocks and transfer blowers.

If you are looking at Dantherm collectors also look at Belfab. They have a nice quiet machines with a unique dump system. I had one and was pleased with it.

Bob,
I looked on line and saw a few pictures of the dump bin, I haven’t found much detail on it yet.
I was just wondering how you dump it? Does the lid hinge? Thanks

The plastic of the hopper has a pivot point and flat for the forks of the forklift to sit. Quite ingenious really.

I'm in the process of putting a rotary airlock under the collector for the cnc. the goal is to get away form the bags and to a dumping bin or cans. I got the airlock from W. Meyer very nice unit.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
