duct size vs machine hood size

We are moving our CNC router and connecting it, along with our beam saw, to the same 5000 cfm collector (Dustek M1500) The beam saw requires around 2600 cfm and the CNC requires 1700 cfm, leaving us a little to spare. The beam saw is already on this system and appears to be ducted well, my question goes to the CNC which has a 10" hood where it connects to the system but only requires around 1700 cfm. We have 14" at the blower, which someone has restricted down to 10" going to the beam saw (which seems appropriate) but everything I find suggests something between an 8" or 9" pipe for that volume at 4500 fpm, even though the hood is 10". Will an 8" or 9" pipe going to a reducer at the hood work? I was thinking a 14/10/9 30 degree branch off the blower, a 60 degree elbow, then 10" to the beam saw, and an 9" long radius 90 degree elbow the the CNC. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated as I'm at the end of my knowledge with this

I believe it is more complex than that. It is about CFM and velocity. It sounds like you are toying with going less than 10". A CNC is hard to collect from. If the manufacturer put a 10" duct on it they did it for a reason.

I agree with Bill regarding the size of the fitting the manufacturer used on their machine. Of course there is more to dust collection needs than the cfm. The speed of the air and size of the duct will ultimately determine the cfm. The general rule for air speed is a minimum speed of 4000 fpm (feet per minute) in a branch. That is the minimum value and you should shoot for between 4500-5000 fpm to maximize the collection of dust and chips on the CNC. The shape of the dust collection hood may require the larger diameter pipe to provide adequate air speed and cfm to collect the dust.

You're dust collector has a 15 hp motor on it. That is adequate in size but the problem I see is the filter area. Looking at similar Dustek models the filter area is only around 136 feet squared. The dust produced in a CNC can quickly coat such a small filter area and create excessive static pressure loss that the collector won't be able to overcome even with the larger motor. You will definitely need to shake your filters often.

I just published an article on our website today outlining the 5 key specifications of a dust collector to understand to choose the proper collector for your application. The article isn't meant to be overly technical, it's written more in layman terms to provide enough information without requiring a person become a dust collection expert. I have provided a link if you want to check it out.

Hello, and thank you for the replies. I should have included filter area, this particular machine is using 4- 72" bags @ 24" diameter (just over 150 sq/ft). I also should have included the duct runs (35' straight run to the CNC, 12' straight run to the beam saw) It also turns out the manufacturer used the same hood on this model for different variations, ours being the lesser of the two (conceivably for upgrading our machine with all the goodies) I've received confirmation from someone in the industry that a 9" duct in this case will work with our machine based on the information in my post. Thanks to all who contributed

You should talk to American fabric filter. They did upgraded filters for a 4 bag I had long ago making it into a 5 bag. If you have ceiling height they can get you much more filter area. They were very easy to work with and what they provided worked great.

Good luck!

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
