Torit dust collector plugging up

I have a problem with my torit dust collector plugging up right at the bottom of the cone when i plane lighter wood like basswood or pine. It works fine with with all other hardwoods. My planer has helical inserts which makes a pretty fluffy shaving. Anyone ever have this problem or have any idea how to fix this?

Check to see if your airlock is leaking air back up into the cyclone. It will float or puff the light fluffy stuff and bypass the airlock. I just rebuilt my airlock and it solved the same problem on a different brand of collector.

You probably have a leak between the cyclone and bin or airlock. Straight knife cutterheads are worse then helical heads on low density woods as the shavings are full width.

I used to have that problem occasionally with the 10hp cyclone that collects chips from my molder during S4S operations. I ended up installing a 1.5 hp blower under the airlock to suck the chips out and blow them into our dumpster. It's still working well after 20 years, and certainly has paid for itself with time saved from not having to empty dust bins.

At my old shop I did something similar with a small blower below the air lock that shot the shavings into three collection bags. Adding a secondary blower is a good system but you have to make sure your air lock vanes are in good shape. Suction through, or back blow upward into the air lock and into the bottom of the cyclone can affect its operation. Like Duster I used my setup for many years without a problem.
