Signal for Compressor

My compressor is in a corner of the building and sometimes gets overlooked at the end of the day as whether it has been turned off or not. Has anyone set up a signal or light that the compressor is on that can be seen from 10 feet away? If so, how does it work?

Thanks, Jim

I have multiple phase converters and 3 phase machines.
I installed 120 volt beacon signal lights on all of the phase converters.
You can tell at a glance in daylight, and especially at closing if any are still running. Hardwired into the "on / energized" power side.
Purchased off Amazon for around 12.00 ea. Nice, large, heavy built units.

I have my compressor on a timer that is connected in series with the coil on the motor starter for it. It has no affect to the operation of the compressor except to shut it off when the timer tells it to. Basically I set the timer in the morning and if I forget to shut it off it doesn't matter it will do it for me.

That is an interesting idea.
.Where did you get such a timer? Have never seen one before.

Almost all my wall plugs and machines are on a 2nd breaker panel that is powered up by a large relay. When the shop lights go off the relay turns off, thus cutting power to the 2nd breaker panel.

There are a few exceptions that get their power off the main breaker panel for one reason or another. Most plugs and motors in the shop though, including the compressor, are off if the lights are off.

There are a few benefits to wiring a shop this way. First, automatic devices like air compressors cannot come on due to leaks in the system. Also any sawdust that has infiltrated into electrical components over the years can't start a fire.

Actually, the compressor is double guarded. Not only does it get its power off the relayed breaker pane but there is also an air solenoid on the air outlet port that also activates by the relay. So even if there is air leakage in the shop air lines the compressor doesn't drain down because the air output is cut off from the rest of the system when I'm not in the shop.

I've done this in various shops I've had over the past 20 to 30 years. It's a great way to prevent a number of potential problems.

I tried to edit the post to include the fact that the relay also keeps the sub-panel and its wired devices safe from power surges that might occur. I guess I was just over the 10 minute limit though and what I typed didn't show up when I saved the edit.

PM, I think Newark Electronics sells the timer relay. Eagle signal is the brand I use they are very reliable. I've never had one fail.

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
