We were all in about a new Kremlin. Have since seen some good reviews on Wagner. What are you guys using?
We currently have a sata dolphin AAA. Just bought a new tip for the sata. $265.00. Seems kinda like high way robbery. We spray all solvent CV.

I have a Kremlin with the MXV gun. Tips for them through a CAT dealer (double groove AAA) run about $75 for the standard tip and $95 for the fine finish which is used for waterborne.

We have a Binks MX pump, and a CAT bobcat pump. Hands down, the CAT is better, and I wouldnt hesitate to buy another. The unit is reasonably priced, and parts are reasonable. My finisher abuses it, and it just keeps working.

I like the Graco ES pump, it won't hiccup. I love the Graco G15 and the G40 guns, they are so much easier to disassemble for cleaning than the CA Technologies aa guns, and they are by far more ergonomic. To me, the most important thing I want is a small fluid hose, a 1/4" ID is great. The thicker fluid hoses are like trying to rig your gun to an eel or a boa constrictor which wants to twist & turn no matter how you try to hold it.

I meant 1/8" ID for the fluid hose, not 1/4"ID as I had written. Whoops.

We have several AAA pumps, the oldest is about 15 years old and has been rebuilt twice, the other two are 3-5 years old.

Basically these are good reliable pumps and they have good support over the phone, especially if you have a good WURTH nearby that sells them.

In all honesty though, I suspect we're going to eventually replace them with new Kremlins. I've sprayed Kremlins that were 25 years old that were horrendously neglected and left with precat finish in them constantly, and by some miracle of good engineering they always worked fine.

Even with good daily cleaning we find that we end up having to clean the bottom ball seals on our CAT pumps more than we'd like..... but we also spray conversion varnish which can be a bit more troublesome when cleaning since the cured residue is a lot more chemically tough.

I have a Cat rig also, maybe 8 or 9 years old now. I replaced the main seal after 3 or 4 years and the new one is adjustable so should last a lot longer, though I haven't had to touch it since. I've also found like Matt that I have to drop the intake tube and clean the ball every so often, maybe every other year or so. Replace the hoses every few years and that's about it. It really is a nice rig and the gun is pretty good as well. I thought about the Kremlin but money was tight at the time so ended up with the CAT. Can't really say anything negative about it.

good luck,
JeffD

I had both a CAT and Merkur running side by side for around 8 years and in that time I probably spent enough in replacement parts on the CAT to buy a new one and always had to keep extra seals and o rings on hand. Gun was rebuilt too.

In the same time period the merkur with the g15 gun had to have one $30 seal replaced in the last 6 months before I sold both.

And the Merkur sprayed better as well. I’ll never own another CAT anything.

If you want top notch look at the Wagner Cobra AAA.

I use the Kremlin 15-25 and 10-18 pumps with the Xcite golden gun for Bin primer and WB precat lacquers. These pumps are super easy to rebuild and clean, pump section has 1 seal and a simple suction check valve. All stainless steel construction
Both pumps are dead reliable and have high resale value.
Before purchasing other pumps check what maintenance is required and what it takes to refresh the pump and air motor

Just my opinion

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.
  • Participants are encouraged to use their real name when posting. Intentionally using another persons name is prohibited, and posts of this nature will be removed at WOODWEB's discretion.
  • Comments, questions, or criticisms regarding Forum policies should be directed to WOODWEB's Systems Administrator

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
