Kremlin AAA pump stalling, stammering.

Matt

We have a fairly new (1.5 yrs max) Kremlin Airmix 15C25 pump.

Yesterday it started behaving odd. While spraying (clear conversion varnish) it would stall out at the very top of the stroke.

Also, it's not pumping in a smooth fashion. It's stammering/pausing inconsistently. It's as if there's a lot more resistance in either the fluid or air motor.

There's always been plenty of throat seal oil, and yesterday I tried putting a little PTFE grease on the air piston, which actually made the stammering/pausing worse, but seemed to reduce the stall-out at the top of stroke.

Pump behaves the same way whether fluid pressure set to 20psi or 40psi.

The pump itself only sprays clear conversion varnish (Sherwood Water White), so definitely not a high viscosity. Fluid pressure always set to 20PSI.

Gets flushed daily with brand new wash thinner. Never, ever left with varnish in the system.

Pull it apart.

Remove the feed tube from the lower cylinder. Remove the nut at the bottom that holds the check ball. Clean and inspect the check ball.

Unscrew the cylinder and pull it off, mind the O ring at the top. If it's swollen from thinner you may have to get another at your local hardware store. Save the old one so you can swap it with the new one.

On the bottom of the piston is a nut. Using 2 wrenches, one for the piston rod and the other for the nut, loosen the nut. Unscrew it completely and be aware there is a 1/8" check ball that will come out with the nut, don't lose it.

After you put the nut and ball in a safe place remove the nylon cup. This is where your problem is. It is packed with solids from the various finishes you have put through the pump. Clean all these solids out and put things back together.

Clean the check nut and ball along with the hole that the fluid flows through above the check ball.

When you go to put the cylinder back on lube it up with mineral oil along with the O ring that goes at the top near the threads. This will make everything slide easily.

Run some thinner through the pump to rid the mineral oil from the system.

Should be good to go.

Leo, thank you for that detailed response. I'll get into it here shortly.

I'm secretly hoping you aren't correct, though, because the only thing that's ever been sprayed through this was clear Conversion varnish, and it gets flushed daily with brand new thinner. If it's packed with solids, that's going to seem very odd to me.

How do you flush your pumps out each day? Do you have to disassemble the fluid motor like this very often?

Again, I greatly appreciate your help!

I'm very lazy about cleaning my pump. I don't fully clean it, I leave pigmented and clears in it over night if I'm spraying the next day. When I do clean it the thinner never runs clear when I'm finished, always has some sort of t tint to it.

The cleaning process I described takes less than 20 minutes. And once you figure out what goes where on assembly you won't be afraid of trying to do it. It is really simple to do.

You've had the pump for a year and a half. That's plenty of time for the piston cup to gather a little bit of grunge at a time to build up over that time. I consider this normal maintenance, so it's something that needs to be done anyway.

You being studious about cleaning only have to do it once every 18 months. Me being a slob, I have to do it every 3-5 months.

Most of the time that my 10-14 goes south there is a blockage in the whip line or in the fluid line. First, after running acetone threw the system, I will hand feed a small diameter wire threw the line followed by air. Not fun, but sometimes small particles will get stuck and not allow the free flow of material threw.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
