Looking for a new 5" 5 hole hook and loop air sander

12/17/21
Mike

Hello Everyone,

I have been using a 5" 5 hole dynabrade 3/32 orbit H&L ROS hooked up to my air line. I also have a Festool 6" sander as well. I love my festool, but I would like something a bit more compact for when I'm stripping and refinishing/sanding chairs and smaller parts. I'm looking to see what you guys are using for a 5" H and L 5 hole sander connected to the air line. Who's do you recommend and if you could provide me any links, I'd appreciate it. "

Also, is the 3/32 going to be my best bet to help prevent the lovely C's we all love so much. (Eye roll)

I have way too much 5" 5 hole H and L paper to swtich in that regard. The pad I currently have doesn't adhere the paper anymore. Maybe there's a way to clean it out to make it stick again? I tried my air hose, but that isn't doing it. Is there a trick I don't know of, so I don't need to replace the pad or the sander all together? I went onto E Replacement parts to find the pad, but it's on backorder with no ETA. I did find Klingspor sells it as well, but I'm not sure if it's the medium one they sell. I'm not sure what came with my sander, because I bought it over 5 years ago.

If you are getting swirl marks you likely don't have enough air flow. Does the sander want to dance? Sudden jogs when you are sanding?

First make sure you have as little hose on the sander as possible. A 30 foot hose has an incredible amount of CFM drop. Second, the spec on the sander says to use a 3/8" hose are you? We have a gauge we use to set the regulator. It is an inline pressure gauge so we can see the pressure at the tool when sanding. The pressure we run, through a 3/8" regulator and 3/8" hose is above the tools recommended pressure. Are you lubing the tool? When it starts to jog it needs lube, if it always jogs you need pressure.

I would make sure you have all the best practices I mentioned above handles and get a new pad and rebuild kit for the air motor.

As a note 3/8" rubber hose is a bear to sand with. We use the special lightweight air hose from McMaster for the final few feet of the line. Let the heavy rubber sit on the floor.

Good Luck!

I would look at Surf-Prep
I have the 3x4 (electric)
But they make an air version of that sander as well as a 5" round
They also have what they called pad saver
It goes between the main pad of the sander and sand paper
So the main pad doesn't get worn out
I think you will like it
Give them a call so that they can help you out
BTW, good customer service

Mastercabman,

My whole issue doesn’t have anything to do with performance, rather the H&L paper no longer wants to stick

Ok so I'm not understanding your question then

What are you looking for?
A solution to your existing sander?
Or a new sander?

A solution to my existing sander would be nice, but if not, what air sanders are people using that are better than Dynabrade and are H&L?

If the H&L pad is worn out then you need to replace it
When you do,I would look into getting "pad saver"
It a thin pad with hooks on one side and loop on the other
You put it between the pad of the tool and sand paper
When it gets worn out, just simply replace it
The pad on the sander is still good and clean for a long time
Surf-Prep has those pad savers
I would also contact Dynabrade to see if they do offer some like that
Hope this helps

Thx for the suggestions.

This is the one I currently have, but it has a black pad. (Not sure what the difference is)

It has. 3/32 orbit. Do you know of any 5” air sanders that are a better quality? I really like my Festool, but it’s too bulky to sand chairs with for refinishing or smaller parts and pieces.

I thought I remembered seeing one I think by Mirka that was supposed to be really good, but i think it was a whole system and I just want an air sander.

Do you know of any air sanders that have a smaller orbit than 3/32 and are a very good quality? I don’t mind spending 3-400 on something i know I’ll have for years without issue

We all hate the C’s and I rarely, if ever get them with my 6” Festool.

I don't know of any air sander that is better than what you have now
The only other one that I know that is very good is the one that I mentioned earlier
Surf-Prep!
I also have a festool sander dts 400 (not a 5" round)and I'm just tired of dumping money on this tool
The pad keeps going to crap(foam start to fall apart)
At $32 it's just not worth it considering that it needs to be replaced a lot compared to other sanders I've owned
Mirka is really good but I don't think they make air Sanders

Fair enough. Thx. I tried cleaning my pad today and no luck. Didn’t do crap, so I’ll have to buy a new pad

Tx for ur help

Hook and loop sander should have no more than 2-4 pounds of pressure on the tool itself. That's the weight of your arm. If you push down at all on the sander, then you get Cs and burnt up hooks. Don't push down and slow down your hand movement. I've seen TV shows where it looks like they are sanding with a wood sanding block and not a machine.

If you are happy with your sander just look harder for a new pad. An interface pad like Mastercabman mentioned is a good idea especially if you are using net abrasives like Abranet. The sander you have is about as good as it gets for air powered random orbit.

If you are pressed for air volume electric random orbits are much more economical powerwise, though more expensive to repair. Mirka makes one that is very similar ergonomically to the Dynabrade, and I believe 3M and Surfprep do as well.

If you are often getting pigtails the 3/32" orbit is not the problem. Slow, even motion with moderate pressure, good abrasive and cleaning the surface between grits may help. What are you currently using for sanding discs?

Mike, MikeM, and Michael have all been used in your posts about sanders. If you kind of stick with the same name, it makes it easier to follow the score card.

We have used all flavors of Dynabrade sanders over the years. We must have over 30 in use right now. This is the best one they currently make in my opinion.

No idea why you'd be looking for a new sander if your pad is roached? We keep 2-3 spare pads on hand at all times. The pad is a consumable item. The hooks wear out, the sanders fall off the bench and hit the floor and the pad gets bent. Just swap out the pad? 15 bucks and your done. They are pretty much generic.

If your looking for new sanders I would look heavily into the AirVantage DC electrics unless your hell bent on staying with the expense of air. We run pretty much all DC electric now. Way cheaper operating cost, quieter, win win.

The pad protectors are really only necessary if your running mesh paper that eats pads for lunch. If your running conventional paper (which you say you are) a new pad is all you need.

Your sanding swirls are an issue of you, or your setup (still you), not the sander.

Here is the 6" version of the sander. You would have to call AirVantage to find out if they have the 5" hook and loop in stock. Dust pickup is mind blowing, quiet, and your cost of air production will drop by the cost of the sander in no time.

Sounds like you just need to change your pad as mentioned.

If you are looking to eventually change sanders, I was using the Airvantage air sanders and loved them, however the folks on this website recommended the Mirka sanders and I bought a couple of them, they have the same on/off switch as the air sanders, they are fantastic, I love using them. Thanks again.

Surf prep makes H&L in two different (strengths) .

One for frequently changed paper. Less grip! Another for much better grip or hold of the paper. I think they are called pad savers. Contact them for the best solution to your problem.

To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion.
