New O7 Spray Tip Clogging

2/23/22

I purchased and in the past two days have been using C.A. Technologies Air Assisted Airless (AAA) Tip 407 (36-407) After about 5 to 10 minutes of spraying with this new 07 orifice the tip starts clogging from the inside. I'm using white pigment Kem Aqua plus. I thought the tip was clogging from the outside so I tried cleaning it a couple of times with a bristle brush using water then lacquer thinner but that did not do the trick. I actually had to pull tip off and put it in a plastic bottle with lacquer thinner with light shaking. That unclogged the spray tip but after using it again for 5 to 10 minutes clogging occurred again.

Does anyone have any remedies to prevent this?

I was using the 09 tip without any clogging problems so I wanted to try something smaller to prevent occasional pinholes. When the 07 tip is not clogging it lays down a beautiful finish so I like to find a way if possible for it not to clog without thinning.

Using 20 - 25 atomization, 30 PSI.

07 is too small to spray that type of finish
I have a 411 on mine and spray solvent based finish
The pinholes you talking about is also known as micro bubbles
I could be wrong about this but usually it's because fluid pressure is too high
Maybe someone else can help you out with more experience with waterborne finish

Do you have a mesh screen O ring between the tip and the gun? Or are you running just a normal O ring?

Leo G, no I don't have a screen O-ring in the tip.

Each screen usually last me months. You do have to take them out and scrub them with a brush and blow them out. The toughest thing is getting them out. I have a pair of tweezers that I ground a point on for getting hairs out of my finishes. Usually that will get them out. I suppose an awl would do the same thing. But I use the tweezers.

Between the screen mesh at the bottom of the gun and the tip mesh O ring I never have issues. Haven't filtered any of my finishes in ages. Just pour it in and go.

I suppose that might be MLC, I've heard other finishes have lots of crap in them and have to be filtered.

Good luck and I hope it helps.

Leo G, I have the O ring filters in my parts storage but a couple of years ago I got in the habit of not using them. I will now because I really like this new 07 tip. I can use my set of dental picks to remove them.

This will be the last time that I will be using Kem Aqua plus. I'm only using it now because of doing a matchup new trash can pull-out cabinet that will go up against an existing cabinet. Even though we knew the color we still had to tweak it.

I'm going to start using Envirolak water-based products. Hopefully, this will be my go-to finish from now on. I just brought 5 gallons of Envirolak EL 100 which are there warm clear in the 30 sheen. Hopefully, this does it and I won't have to go back to Kem Aqua plus.

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.

  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
